Something About this Stinks! 2010 Top 50 Book Blog Award - Online Degrees

I've always been a bit of a skeptic, so when I got this email, my antennas went up! My blog was selected (some of your blogs as well) for a :
2010 Top 50 Book Blog Award.

Here is what the email said:

Congratulations! Emma Lee here, and your blog, Bibliophile by the Sea, has
received our 2010 Top 50 Book Blogs award!

You can see your name amongst our winners here at:
www.onlinephdprograms.com/top_general_book/#Bibliophile_by_the_Sea

Winners were chosen through a scoring system led by internet nominations,
which came from your reader base!

You can let your readers know you won by embedding the badge code to one of
the different awards graphics found at:
www.onlinephdprograms.com/top_general_book/badges/.

If you choose not to accept the award, please let me know, so we can move
on.  Dennis and I work hard to put these awards together, with zero outside
financial assistance, and we don't want these awards to go to waste.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions. Many
questions can be answered at www.awardingtheweb.com/about or
www.awardingtheweb.com/disclaimer.

Again, Congratulations, and I hope to see your badge soon!

Cheers,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I decided to do a little research, and found that my blog wasn't very special at all...boo hoo, boo hoo!
In fact, if I chose not to accept this award which is FREE ADVERTISING for ONLINEPHDPROGRAMS.COM, I should notify them so they can pass the award on to someone else...LOL
You see by posting one of their 2010 Top Blog Award Badges, they get FREE Advertising from me, and I get some phony recognition award. NO THANK YOU!
JUST look at SOME of the blog awards they've given out and in what categories:
 What's Your Take on This?
Would You feel honored or spammed?
  1. I'm not sure how I would feel, but your blog is special!
  2. Oh, I got this one, too, and it went straight to spam. As soon as I saw the main address was for Online PhDs, the radar went off. Someone else can win an award ;-)
  3. It sounds like a sham to me and good for you for sniffing it out (so to speak). And, you've alerted a lot of other bloggers who might be on their "winning" list.
    Just one more reason your blog rocks!
  4. Like Kathy said, your blog is definitely special:)
    But I would be wary of these "awards" too. it definitely looks like a free advertisement. Good catch!
  5. Well, I suppose it's like those emails one gets that says, "I love your blog, may I link to yours?" and it turns out to be some bizarre shoe fetish place or something. One can only marvel at the imaginations of spammers!
    ReplyDelete
  6. Well *I* love your blog!!! But this sounds like sapm to me :( I got something similar a while back, only it was advertising for Lexmark printers or something.
  7. Despite the fact that there are quite a few quality blogs on the list, my radar went off when I got the notification as well. A little googling underscored that the notion it wasn't quite kosher.
    But, I've only seen one book blogger accept the award, and since she's won legit recognition in the past, she probably didn't delve into the reasons why she might be recognized again.
  8. I got one too and immediately thought "what is up with this?!"
    While it appears somewhat legit, the web address of Online PhD was the dead giveaway that this was not worth the time of day. I immediately deleted - and did not bother to notify them :)
    I agree with all the other commenters --- you blog IS special!!
  9. Aren't people just so creative in their publicity bids? Well, you're an award-winner in my book, Diane, but I think you were wise to check this out.
    It kind of is a shame because there are legitimate awards out there that are not connected to advertising for anyone.
  10. You blog looks like a jewel to me, I love books also so any blog about blogs is a find for me.
  11. You are wise to research these notifications...not that your blog isn't special. It is most definitely great.
    But I'm thinking that, not only are these "awards" a spammer thing, but you might even end up being "persuaded" to pay for the honor.
    I've received those notifications in the past (honorary things for which you have to pay).
    Sometimes the World Wide Web is a sneaky bastard (well, some of the people ON the web).
    Enjoy your day, knowing that your readers adore your blog!!
  12. Ugh. Not only do you get spammed, they want to trick you into spamming others. Nice. Sounds like the gift that keeps on taking!
    Your blog deserves a *real* award! =D
  14. I got this one too and had pretty much the same reaction you did. Although being recognized is nice, it seems really underhanded to make it a requirement to link to an advertiser's site. Which is why peer recognition is so much better - and comments from my blogging friends it the best recognition I could want. :)
    ReplyDelete
  15. I say spam - not that you don't deserve an award! :)
  16. Somedays I swear it is so aggravating with these spammers, I just want to chuck the whole blog out the window. Well, in the recycle bin. They don't know who they were dealing with when they "awarded" you! Ha!! Thanks for spreading the word - it's probably the only way we can get this practice to stop. I bet people do fall for it though.
    Good post!
  17. "Winners were chosen through a scoring system led by internet nominations, which came from your reader base!"
    Pure, unadulterated spam, Diane, plus taking advantage of your email address.
    Online Ph.D.s—I think I'll get one in nuclear physics, just to pass the time.
  18. I love how the list of 50 is heavily stacked in blogs starting at the beginning of the alphabet. They must be working down a list. ;)
    But you certainly deserve recognition anyway!
    ReplyDelete
  19. Hmmm... you definitely deserve an award but that one does seem a bit spam-y to me!
    ReplyDelete
  20. Strange isn't it?? What people will do just to generate $$. But I'm in the same camp as Kathy and think your blog is very AWESOME!
    ReplyDelete
  21. I got one similar to this but it was sponsored by Online MBA programs. Mine was for the top 25 retirement blogs. I checked out all the other people who were awarded and they were people just like me. It may be spam but I fell for it. I was actually pleased.
    ReplyDelete
  22. I received one of their awards in a different category. I haven't notified them of anything, but I did decide to conduct an experiment: I put their badge up on my blog but removed the HTML tag that linked it back to their website. We shall see if anything happens.
    ReplyDelete
  23. great research to expose these spammers
    ReplyDelete
  24. Either a person's work is worthy of an award or it isn't. Letting them know you don't want to jump through their hoops so they can give someone else a chance to is just tacky. Good for you for seeing through such malarky and informing those not as experienced online about it.
    ReplyDelete
  25. Diane, this definitely sounds like spam. Once those things come in there is only one place for them....trash! lol You don't need some phony award to know that your blog is awesome : )
    ReplyDelete
  26. Well...thanks ALL you awesome bloggers for your sweet comments about my blog, and for agreeing that this outfit: ONLINEDEGREES is taking advantage of unsuspecting bloggers.
    Cathy....I like your experiment about posting the badge and taking out the link..LOL
    ReplyDelete
  27. Spam it is. But I do feel your blog is special. Consider yourself rewarded by all of us who take the time to not only read but comment. We think you are the best!
    ReplyDelete
  28. Diane, your blog is wonderful and quite special. Thanks for the warning--I am no longer an unsuspecting book blogger!
    ReplyDelete
  29. Ugh, spammers sure are getting a little more creative these days! Love your blog though!
    ReplyDelete
  30. I got the same email as you and was disappointed to realize this was a scam!
    I like Cathy's approach of putting the award on her blog but not linking to the original site!
    ReplyDelete
  31. VERY interesting. Someone posted about this a few days ago--a congrats to the book bloggers--but when I clicked onto her link I noticed it was deleted. I wonder if this is why?
    You should still feel special regardless if this is spam or not. :)
    ReplyDelete
  32. Congratulations!! :-)
    I saw this award mentioned on another blog and went to have a little investigate. Online phd have been spamming me with "look at our new top 100 list" email for ages, so the moment I saw that they were running the award I was suspicious.
    I'd put you in my top 50 blog list though :-)
    ReplyDelete
  33. I got one too, but just ignored it. I'm curious about Cathy's experiment.
    But like Kathy said: *I* think your blog is special.
    ReplyDelete
  34. You were so smart to check into this, but I agree with everyone. I love your blog and it is special. :)
    It reminds me of the Who' Who in America solicitors.
    ReplyDelete
  35. Your blog is special and wonderful but these spammers are ANNOYING. I guess it was only a matter of time before they started preying on us book bloggers.
    ReplyDelete
  36. Hmmm...but seeing the badge and linking through to the list of the "winning" blogs did bring me here for a visit and a click that added yours to favorite blogs I visit two to three times a week. I'm not a sp*mmer--just someone who likes to read and to read about what others are reading.
    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd feel spammed ... but I'm bummed I didn't even get chosen to fool! : )
    ReplyDelete
  38. Definitely sounds like a spam to me. And I echo the others: Your blog is special and I enjoy reading it! :)
    ReplyDelete
  39. Totally spam, but you don't need an anonymous award group to tell you that your blog is special...I could have told you that for free!!
    ReplyDelete
  40. I've seen this one around. Good for you for doing your homework!
    ReplyDelete
  41. You know, if people want to basically do a trade... like I'll post your link if you post mine, then that's one thing. This is an outright sham and sneaky at that.
