Sunday Blatherings and New Books

Is the weekend over already?  It hardly seems possible.  Yesterday started with a trip to the grocery store -- nice and early before the masses arrived. Then the hub and I tried a new restaurant, a few towns over, for lunch, and was it FANTASTIC.

The rest of the day was spent watching movies - Gravity (good) and Nebraska (loved it). Have you seen these?  Today we watched the first (3) episodes of House of Cards (Season 1) - yep we are behind the times, but plan to catch up soon.

Baking -  Today I was inspired to try a new dessert: Gram Lindquist's Banana Cake with Maple Frosting and Salted Hazelnuts after seeing it on one of my favorite foodie blogs by Susan, The Spice Garden. I used a 10" square pan instead of a 9" and walnuts instead of hazelnuts, but it was awesome all the same. (Thank you Susan). It's easy to make and I had all of the ingredients on hand as well.

New Books
Have a great week everyone!

  1. I'm SO in love with the cover for All the Birds, Singing and the book sounds amazing to boot. I won a copy from Goodreads, so I can't wait to see what it looks like in person. Really curious what Peter Heller's new book is going to be like, too!

  3. All the weekends seem to be flying by lately. Too bad work weeks don't have the same problem. Gravity was excellent, I'm glad my mom and I saw it on the big screen. I got a copy of Bittersweet, too. Look forward to seeing what you think of it!

    1. Oh, and I watched (and LOVED) Nebraska this week. My LA son had recommended it, and he works in the movie business, so I knew I'd love it.

  8. I have The Painter, too!!

I really wish I could do without grocery shopping. I know some people love it but I really do not like it at all. I hate the crowds and the money spent. With The Teen in the house, it's not unusual for me to drop $300 and then only have food for say...three days.

  9. How did I miss The Painter! I didn't know Peter Heller had a new book coming out - I loved The Dog Stars.

  10. I seriously toyed with starting House of Cards too, but opted for Suits instead. I needed something lighter after finishing Orange is the New Black, and House of Cards just seemed too intense for me right now.

I'll be interested to hear if you like it!

  13. Hi Diane,

That looks like my kind of dessert, although it would have to be something I could choose from a restaurant menu, as it wouldn't be hubbies thing at all, so wouldn't be worth my while making at home!

I love the sound of all your new books this week, however 'The Painter' particularly caught my eye.

I must be about the only woman on the planet who doesn't enjoy shopping of any description, unless it is around a craft store, or bookshop. Grocery shopping once a week, sends me into depression and I tend to time myself going around the supermarket, so that I don't spend too long at the chore!!! Sad I know, but it's just how I am!!

Thanks for a fun and interesting post and I hope that you have good week,

    Yvonne

  14. My weekends seem to fly far too quickly. What with all the errands and housework, it's a wonder I find any time to sit down at the computer, let alone read!

I'm anxious to see both Gravity and Nebraska. We watched Jobs this past weekend and thought it was quite good.

I love the cover art for Bittersweet and will be anxious to hear your thoughts on it.

Hope you have a good week!
