I was not a huge fan of the novel, Gone Girl, but everyone had been raving about the movie, and heck Ben Affleck is easy on my eyes, so yesterday I convinced my husband to go see the movie. WOW WOW WOW - 2 hours and 40 minutes and it just flew by. We both LOVED the movie, so much we will be sure to see this one again multiple times when it's mass released. Have you seen the movie? What did you think?
I didn't get much reading done this weekend or review writing either for that matter. No excuses, it just wasn't in the cards. I did get some new books in the mail over the last few weeks that look rather good.
Have a Good Week All and Happy Reading
- Nora Webster; Colm Toibin (Simon & Schuster)
- Leaving Time; Jodi Picoult (Random House Audio)
- There Once Lived a Mother Who Loved Her Children, Until They Moved Back In; Ludmilla Petrushevskaya
- (2) Penelope Fitzgerald books (Knopf)
- I'm My Own Dog; David Ezra Stein (Candlewick Press)
Went to see the movie to see what all the excitement was about the book. Interesting plot with a twist but I didn't like it enough to read the book or see the movie again. Glad you loved it though.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy about the book, but somehow, for me, the movie worked so well.
DeleteGone Girl was awesome! I loved the book and the movie. I enjoyed Ben Affleck's yummy muscles too. Has he always been that ripped? ;-)
ReplyDeleteDiana...LOL, my coworker, 62, said she thought he gained weight! I laughed and told her I only noticed the muscles:)
DeleteHave you read Ludmilla Petrushevskaya before? Her short stories are really out there, very different - you could definitely get the Russian vibe in the collection I read.
ReplyDeleteI have not read this author previously, but now you leave me curious to do so Lisa.
DeleteI loved both the movie and book of Gone Girl. I thought the movie was well done. I agree, Ben is easy on the eyes.
ReplyDeleteBeth, Glad the movie worked for you and glad I cleaned my glasses (for Ben). LOL
DeleteI'm not sure about the movie as I loved the book but, like you, I keep hearing good reviews. I also loved Leaving Time, hope you enjoy it. Emma
ReplyDeleteEmma, glad you loved Jodi's new book as well.
DeleteI did see the movie last Monday. I wrote a post on it about the book vs. movie. I thought they did a pretty sweet job too. I was afraid it would be drawn out as long as it was, but like you said - it kept you engaged.
ReplyDeleteYes Shelia, the time flew by for sure.
DeleteI saw Gone Girl the week before last with my son and am going back on Thursday with a friend.
ReplyDeleteI'm My Own Dog is adorable! I'm jealous that you got Leaving Time.
Kathy, I'm glad u liked Gone Girl enough for a repeat showing.
DeleteSeems everyone is reading Leaving Time these days! I used to read a ton of Picoult, but haven't read her in awhile...will have to get back on the wagon!
ReplyDeleteI didn't read much this weekend either...we had a ton of Halloween activities with the kids, but did finally get a good 75 pages of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy in last night.
Leaving Time would be a good one to ease back into Picoult with Sarah.
DeleteI'm on the library hold list for Nora Webster... love Colm Toibin's writing. Not much reading for me this weekend either, but that's fine. Hope you have a great week, Diane!
ReplyDeleteI love Toibin's writing as well. Anxious to try this one as well.
DeleteI just received my copy of Leaving Time so I'll be listening to it soon. I participated in the Readathon on Saturday and while I didn't do 24 hours, I still managed to burn out on reading and spent Sunday (gasp) without opening a book.
ReplyDeleteI saw Gone Girl and was surprised to like the movie a little better than the book.
Leslie, I'm hearing that many people did not think the book could be topped by the movie, but somehow they managed to do that. I think you will enjoy Leaving Time.
DeleteCongrats on the Read-a-thon.
Now I want to see that movie! Enjoy your new goodies, Diane. I was only able to spend a bit of time reading this past weekend, but it was nice. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you do get a chance to see the movie.
DeleteAs for reading on weekends, sometimes, weekends just are not meant to be spent indoors reading.
Yay! You liked Gone Girl too! I was surprised by the movie too. My husband watches a lot of movies but he rarely likes each movie he sees. He loved Gone Girl and even he was surprised to enjoy it so much. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteYes, this is definitely a good one for couples:) LOL
DeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the movie, sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian - There's even an orange cat in the movie:)
DeleteI was not a fan of the book either, and had no plans to see the movie, but after your thoughts, I just may have to go!
ReplyDeleteNise, I never thought my husband would like this one, but he loved it as well. Go go go and see it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting books this week! I think I've added all of them to my list of books to go investigate. I enjoyed the book Gone Girl but I'm not rushing to see the movie. I love the casting and think it's exactly right but I'm just not sure I want to spend anymore time with those people. I've heard it's great though. Glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I know what you mean about not wanting to spend more time with the characters from Gone Girl - they deserved one another.
DeleteThis was one movie where no one got up during the movie and people were as quiet as mice - glued to their seats.
I did love the book and so went to see the film last week - fantastic, I want to watch this one again! One of the few times I've been to the cinema and everyone has stayed quiet and in their seats... gripping stuff, I'm glad you enjoyed it even though you weren't a fan of the book.

Yes, I just mentioned that --everyone was riveted to their seats. Glad u loved the movie as well Cleo.
DeleteI saw Gone Girl with a friend last week and we both thought it was great!! Even though I had read the book, I'd forgotten a lot of details, so the suspense element was just right. I know I'll watch it again when it comes out on dvd since my husband will probably want to see it.
ReplyDeleteI have the ARC of Nora Webster and am anxious to start in on it. I've recently started a Jojo Moyes' book (The Last Letter from Your Lover) and it hasn't grabbed my attention, so I may get to Toibin's book sooner than later!
We both loved the book, but for some reason (an aversion to movie prices, I think) we haven't been to see the movie. Definitely want to when it comes to tv though!
ReplyDeleteI just purchased the book yesterday! I've heard so many positive comments about it. I want to see the movie too. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie so much.
ReplyDeleteGone Girl did fly by didn't it? Jason loved it too and he hadn't read the book.
