First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Guise of Another; Allen Eskens

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros where I share the first paragraph sometimes two, of a book that I'm reading or plan to read soon. I really enjoyed The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens so I'm looking forward to his most recent book as well.

PROLOGUE

"That night, there were a few things that the man knew to a religious certainty.  He knew that he'd soon be having sex with the woman sitting in the passenger seat of his Lexis.  He knew that neither his wife nor the woman's husband yet suspected their infidelities.  And he knew that any whisper of guilt he may have felt would soon be silenced by the tumult of their act.

There were other things, however, that the man did not know.  He didn't know where or how they would be having sex.  He didn't know whether his feelings for this woman reached beyond the carnal pull of her body.  And he didn't know that their recklessness that night would trigger a chain of events that would ripple far beyond their self-absorbed little world."

What do you think -- keep reading or pass?

  2. Intriguing! I do not especially like the man in the opening paragraphs you shared, but I definitely want to know what will happen next. This sounds like a good one, Diane.

    1. Yes, from his tone I agree - the story has hooked me Wendy after just 4 chapters.

  3. I must honestly confess that this is not my cup of tea at all. I was cheated on -- and more than once, as I later discovered -- in my first marriage. Therefore, I have absolutely no interest in reading about adulterous affairs. I agree with Wendy (Literary Feline); I don't like the man described at the beginning of this story. He is totally unconcerned with anything except his own selfish, lustful desires. Although he's a fictional character, I feel the strong urge to sneak up on him and beat him to a pulp! I guess my ex left some scars....

Although this is definitely not for me, there is an element of intrigue in it. So, if, unlike me, you are unscarred, then you will most likely enjoy this book! Happy Reading!! :)

    1. Yes, I can understand Maria. My first marriage ended for the same reasons but, after 33 years it's water under the bridge LOL - It's an addictive story so far.

  4. Yes, I would keep reading as this opening leads the reader into imagining the answers to the questions posed - my gut feeling is this isn't going to end well!

  7. Um, yes...I'd keep going. Who is the man and who is the woman and why are they making this decision - a bad one, I'd think.

  12. I read the first one by this author and loved it! I picked up this one last month but I wasn't sure about it and returned it to the library unread. Maybe I should give it another try. He is a very good writer.

  13. I hate it when people dive into what will obviously be a mess. But I know that temptations are hard to resist.

  14. No, this one is not for me, it sounds as though it will be a bit of a car crash!

  16. "Tumult?" The way these authors describe sex is something else. I would read it in a minute. Will the husband or wife kill one or both of them?? I'm sure they will get caught. Good suspense.
