Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros where I share the first paragraph sometimes two, of a book that I'm reading or plan to read soon. (I started this on Sunday; it's so well written.)
Homegoing; Yaa Gyasi
Knopf - 2016
Part One - Effie
"THE NIGHT EFFIA OTCHER was born into the musky heat of Fanteland. a fire raged through the woods just outside her father's compound. It moved quickly, tearing a path for days. It lived off the air, it slept in caves and hid in trees; it burned, up and through, unconcerned with what wreckage it left behind, until it reached an Asante village. There, it disappeared, becoming one with the night."
What do you think -- keep reading or pass?

Powerful opening lines. Now I am curious!
ReplyDeleteLaurel, the writing is fantastic. Originally I thought this might not be a ME book but, so happy I took the leap - it's wonderful.
DeleteThis book has gotten lots of buzz, so I'd give it a try.
ReplyDeleteIt's really good.
DeleteI am eager to read this one. Hopefully next month. I hope you are enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful Wendy, such beautiful writing.
DeleteWhoa, that's beautiful. I also like the word of the title. "Homegoing" has a different feel than "homecoming." I want to read more.
ReplyDeleteI'm so enjoying this one so far 1/3 into it.
DeleteAn unusual beginning! I'd read more.
ReplyDeleteIt is a strange opening, but beautiful writing.
DeleteThat is an unusual opening but it definitely conjures up a picture of an out of control fire. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteYes, I kept thinking of all the CA fires I've read about.
DeleteWith an opening like that I would expect EFFIA OTCHER to be a feisty character, as unpredictable as the fire on the day she was born. I would read on, but would probably stop if Effia turned out to be disappointing.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful story so far.
DeleteI'm dying to read this book. Felt happy to see it on your page this morning. Had only read the synopsis or blurb somewhere else. I like the beginning. I can see and feel the fire.
ReplyDeleteTea, I hope you try it, it's so good so far.
