Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros sharing the first paragraph or two, from a book I'm reading or will be reading soon. (I really enjoyed the first two books by this author, The Life We Bury and The Guise of Another.)
The Heavens May Fall; Allen Eskens
Seventh Street Books - 2016
Part 1
The Death
Chapter 1
"The courtroom had fallen quiet, the judge's words lost behind a low hum that droned in Max Rupert's ears. Max reached for his water glass, a waxy paper cup on the rail of the witness stand. It lifted empty and light. He didn't remember drinking the last of his water. He paused, the empty cup halfway to his lips, unsure what to do next. Pretend to take a drink? Put the cup back down on the rail?
What do you think? Keep reading or probably pass?

I definitely want to know more. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI started it today and it has my interest; nice short chapters too, which I love.
DeleteI'd keep reading. I like stories that include trials.
ReplyDeleteMe too and this one has pulled me in early.
DeleteI think I would pretend to take a sip. I like the opening you shared, Diane. I've heard good things about this author. I would keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI can recall doing some public speaking and surprised when my cup was empty LOL I pretended to drink as well.
DeleteSounds like a winner to me, we've all had those moments with the empty cup but not often on the witness stand, I hope?
ReplyDeleteI have in a public speaking situation. I pretended to drink :)
DeleteI always enjoy good courtroom drama, even if it is just a scene, so I would probably keep reading.
ReplyDeleteIt's good so far.
DeleteI've still not read the first two books by this author, but I definitely mean to. Will put the first one where I can see it. Maybe that will help. LOL
ReplyDeleteThis beginning sounds very promising. I'd keep going!
Butting in to say I have not read the first, but I did read The Life We Bury and I enjoyed this one even more. I am usually a stickler for reading in order, but this book highlights background characters in the other books and doesn't necessarily have to be read in order if you don't care about that. :)
DeleteThat intro leaves me with lots of questions. And I like the cover. A new author for me to try.
ReplyDeleteoh this author is good; hope u try him.
DeleteI so enjoyed The Life We Bury, I will definitely read this one and his second one too. Adding to my TBR list!!
ReplyDeleteJudy, I think you will enjoy the other ones as well.
DeleteThis sounds like a very intimate moment with all eyes upon him. Hope you enjoy it. Here's Mine
ReplyDeleteSo far so good.
DeleteI like the intro and would keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI liked it as well. I've been in a similar situation.
DeleteI read this one and LOVED it. As a lawyer, I usually stay away from books with legal themes (enough of that during the day), but this one was worth it. It's really a story of two friends, two good men, put at odds on opposite sides of a murder investigation. I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it if you keep going!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad u enjoyed this one. I started it today and am really enjoying it.
DeleteI read and enjoyed The Life We Bury last year, so I would pick this up just based on the author's style in that one. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis one is good too Rita.
DeleteI'd keep reading. I like the drama set up in just one paragraph. I want to know what happens next. I've been wanting to read this author's books. I hope you enjoy it Diane.
ReplyDeleteMargot, yes you must read this author. I know you will enjoy his style.
DeleteWhat an interesting title for the chapter! I am very intrigued now.
ReplyDeleteI started it waiting for an appt. this morning and it was hard to put down.
DeleteI like the sound of this and would definitely keep reading. I like legal stories.
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying it Emma.
DeleteYes, I like that intro and would read more!
ReplyDeleteI think you'd like it and nice short charters too.
