Reading and Reviewing Slump Continues

Hello Readers,

Between the loss of our cat Freckles on Monday and the outrageous news we face day after day, my reading slump continues.  I'm reading, but very slowly as I'm easily distracted it seems.  It's just easier to play Words with Friends or Yahtzee on my phone while watching the baseball playoffs, comedy shows and occasional news.  I do have so many books that I want to read, so I'm hopeful I snap out of this slump.

Back in early 2008, we were a 5 - cat family but now we are down to just 1 cat.

Buddy

Buddy is 15 years old now and is pretty spry for his age. Every day we can count on him practicing his jumping skills, making it half way up the door jamb or higher.  Although he's always just tolerated the other cats, preferring my lap any chance he got, he seems lost this past week.  His appetite has increased (he needed to gain a few pounds after losing a few over the last few years.  I feel sad though as he sometimes cries out like he's missing Freckles or isn't sure what has happened.  He's more of a lap cat and had even slept between our pillows briefly a few times this week.  I'm enjoying it while I can, as we all know -- life is short.

We almost brought home this little guy this week --

BUT, we decided that now was not the time to introduce a kitten to a 15 y/o cat who was never overly fond of other cats.  We gave a donation to the shelter instead and, decided that when Buddy is gone we'll either adopt 2 - kittens or a senior cat instead.

Hope everyone has had a good week and that next week is even better.

  1. I'm with you on being distracted. It was a rough week for our country.

  2. Diane, I love Words with Friends but I know from experience that it can interfere with reading time. We are currently catless but I love cats. When our dog calms down we may get a cat, in a few years.

  3. I agree with you, Buddy probably needs a quiet retirement.

  4. Aw, that has to be a bit lonely for Buddy but I'm sure it wouldn't be easy for him to have a new cat in the house. I hope you find a book to take you away.

  5. I think you are right. I still hope however you'll get out of the reading slump and I'll find your reviews around.

  6. It's hard to look at the news and not feel depressed by all that is going on. I think right now it's just take time to take care of yourself.

  7. It REALLY hard to stay focused. With every Tweet comes angst and frustration. I can hardly be on Twitter at all these days and I have to be on there for work.

  8. I can't seem to concentrate or get into a book either. I've stopped listening to 2 audiobooks, Sleeping Beauties and Little Fires Everywhere. I may try again after I get out of this slump, but may not.

  9. Pets really do notice change in a household and express it any way they can. This past week has been tough and taking a reading break to watch "mindless" TV is a good solution.

  10. I, too, have found myself distracted by all that is going on around the world. I have hidden out in books avoiding everything else. Hugs!

  11. I am having the same reading distractions...this country is not a kind place right now, and I love your mug, which says it all!

Buddy looks a little wary...he is probably wondering what will happen next.

    Have a better week.

  12. We've been watching the baseball playoffs too--distractions are good these days. I find reading takes my mind of the here and now, although my solitaire games are reaching an all-time high!

You made the right decision--an old cat and a young cat don't need to mix well.

Hang in there--we're all in this together.

  13. Aw, Diane - I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. And your reading slump! I feel the same way about the news, but it inspires me to read more...fiction! A nice way to escape. Selfish maybe, but it helps.

Thinking of you & hoping you are able to enjoy reading again soon!

  14. I've been in a reading slump for months, but finally got hooked on The Children's Crusade by Ann Packer, so maybe I'll actually finish a book this month! The news this past week has been awful. So much sadness from the shooting in Vegas to the horrific fires in California. I have family in Santa Rosa, but they've been lucky so far. So many haven't been.

That's an awfully cute little kitty, but I think you made the right decision. For now.

    Take good care.

  15. Buddy does look like a guy who does not tolerate fools - and a kitten is nothing more than a fool!
Sounds like his extra lap time now is what all of you need.
