A Dog and His Seeing - Eye Guide

Some of you may have already seen this around the web, but when my dear friend Pam sent this my way, I just felt like I had to share it. The pair were in need of a forever home, and it seems that they have found one.

Lily is a Great Dane that has been blind since a bizarre medical condition required that she have both eyes removed. For the last 5 years, Maddison, another Great Dane, has been her sight. The two are, of course, inseparable.

But people will never forget how you made them feel."

As an animal lover in need on a good laugh, I was pretty sure this book would fit the bill.  I wasn't aware that there was a website devoted to this as well as Awkward Family Photos until I got my hands on this eBook.

Unfortunately, the eBook was read on my black/white print Kindle, so for a book which consists mostly of photographs, this is not the ideal way to view this book. I was able to flip through the actual book at my local bookstore as well, so that made the book much more fun for me. The book is a quick read, and does include a few brief stories along the way.  Many of the photos are totally ridiculous and it made me wonder about the people submitting the photos for consideration -- some are certainly cringe-worthy.

There is a section of Holidays and I think these were may favorite --very funny. In addition there is a section of farm animals which were very fun, vacations with people and their pets.  Other sections feature, cats, dogs, exotic pets and just plain "awkward pets".

This is one of those books that would be perfect to have on your coffee table when you are have company over --a perfect conversation started for sure.  This book would also make a fun holiday present for the animal lover who has everything.  Check it out and see what you think.

165 - Oogy: the Dog Only a Family Could Love; Larry Levin

What animal lover wouldn't be a bit curious about this sweet, but disfigured face, of a dog called Oogy? I had read several reviews on this book, and even though, I told myself, "no more dog stories", this audio book called my name from the library shelves, so I couldn't resist.

Fate seemed to bring Oogy and the Levin family together. They met when the author took his twin sons to the vet, along with their terminally ill cat. First thought to be a pit bull, but later it was clarified that he was in fact, an Argentine Dogo breed. Oogy was just a puppy when he was found abandoned, in a cage, with half his face and ear chewed off. The vets at Ardmore Animal Hospital near Philadelphia where he was taken, had recognized his injuries as ones resulting from dog fighting. Oogy was too young to be a fighter, he had been a bait dog.

Oogy had numerous surgeries to relieve intense pain he experienced from his injuries. Despite the horrific first few months of life he experienced, he never lost his spirit to live, and to forgive. Oogy immediately bonded with his human family. He made himself at home in his new environment, and get into trouble like just about every other puppy.  The Levin's never showed anger toward Oogy and made a promise to him that they would give him the best possible life.  When this book was released in October of 2010, Oogy was 8 years old and still a happy member of the Levin household.

This animal rescue story had a happy ending, but sadly that is not always the case. If you are looking for an uplifting, redemptive story about an animal who got a second chance at life....try Oogy; I think you will enjoy it.  The audio book was red by Joe Barrett who did a decent job. It is a relatively short book, just 5-cds.

Here is a brief video about Oogy and his family.
