Sunday Salon - February 7th

Hello, Sunday Blogging Buddies, hope you had a great week!
We've been watching the mid-Atlantic snow storm reports, and California mudslide news --just awful.  I am hoping all of you who live in those areas are safe and doing well.  We just have cold windy weather to contend with, and for that we are grateful.

We went to see the new Mel Gibson movie this week: The Edge of Darkness.  It was good (not great, but worth seeing).  We especially liked the fact that it took place in Massachusetts : Boston area as well as the western part of the state Northampton, so there were lots of familiar places we were able to identify. Patiently waiting for Shutter Island which hits the theaters her on 2/19/2010.

Today is my husband's birthday, and Wednesday was my sister-in-laws, so today we are having a joint birthday celebration...... pizza and cake party. Neither Henry or Nancy would not want me to mention their ages on my blog, but I know you are curious, aren't you? LOL  Let's just say, that if we put the appropriate number of candles on their joint birthday cake it would look something pretty close to this:

Instead I am being considerate of their advanced age, and remembering that payback is a bit_ _. Here is a picture of their actual cake which will have (1) box of 24 candles for the two of them to blow out because of their reduced lung capacity (at their age).  Fortunately, neither of them read my blog so I can pretty much write whatever I'd like :)

I wanted to thank Lisa @ Lit and Life for passing on this award to me. I try to remember to thanks those who thought of me, but I know I am not good about passing them on. Please don't be offended, it just isn't always possible. I hope you understand.

Thanks again Lisa!

Well, time to make some coffee and then still some last minute details to get ready for today's company. Oh, and not to forget, the Super Bowl (My only real interest in this event is the commercials that everyone will be talking about the next day).  Stay safe everyone and enjoy your week.

  1. What a great picture of a cake loaded with candles! That's a riot! We tend to have the same "menu" for birthdays and in fact any "special" occasion: pizza and cake! Or if it's in the summer: pizza and ice cream pie! Have a good time at your joint celebration!

  5. You decorated a LOVELY cake! I know all will have fun this evening.

My students have been talking about Shutter Island and I just realized that it was indeed a book. Have you read it? The premise sounds intriguing, but I like to read a book before I see the movie.

  7. The cake looks lovely - hope you have a great time celebrating tonight!

I second SB's comment - how do you read so much? I am struggling with that a bit these days . . .

  9. SB and Booksnyc.....I guess I am lucky in that I am not working at all right now, have no children left at home and all the time in the world to do as I please. My husband and I love staying home, so that is how I get to read about 200 book each year. Remember one book was Fancy Nancy, all of 24 pages :)

Your day will come too when you have nothing but free time.

  13. That is a great photo of an over-candled cake! Have a wonderful time celebrating! Your cake looks yummy!
I haven't been on the blogs this week and see I missed your review of American Rust! Thanks for mentioning it today! That book has been on my TBR list for a long time, and I wasn't sure about it! Thanks for a great review! (I went back and read it!) It convinced me to put it on the top of the list!

  14. You've had a busy week. That huge storm in the east brought us 4 1/2 inches of rain. Shutter Island looks good, but I think it might be too scary for me. Congratulations on your award!

  16. Hi, Diane,
Thanks for your nice comment on my blog today! I'm glad to find yours; I love to read about books (and I know I've been to the beach near that building in your header, but can't quite place it.) Bloodroot and Unfinished Desires are on my read-soon list, too. Right now I'm in the midst of ONe Amazing Thing.

  17. You got a lot of reading done!

You know, it's funny but I had totally forgotten about the Super Bowl until you mentioned it. :)

  18. Haha... Love all those candles! Have fun celebrating.

I'm also waiting the release of Shutter Island - those previews make it look so good!

  19. My mom's birthday was last week and my dad's was yesterday. I slacked though and didn't get a cake made for them, but we did take them out to eat yesterday.

I have the Super Bowl on solely for the commercials and the halftime show too. :-)

  20. My husband and I are exactly 9 months apart so I get to tease him for that long about being old. But I always have to be careful because if I'm too mean, he really amps up for the 3 months we're the same age! When I first read that your husband doesn't read your blog, I thought "what the heck?" then realized that mine hubby doesn't read mine, either. What they don't know won't hurt them!

  24. Oh, my gosh, of course you're Melissa's mom! I'm sorry I didn't make the connection! She'd told me you blog about books, but I'd forgotten your blog name. No more!

  25. Oh ... you got some zingers in this post! And that cake is hilarious!

I saw a preview for "Shutter Island" the other day and it looks REALLY SCARY!

  26. Happy Birthday to hubby and SIL! That cake is pretty and how funny would that be if we put all those candles on a cake as we get older.
Lots going on weather wise all over the US. We got dumped on yesterday and are expecting another storm this week. I am ready for spring! Looking forward to your review of Making Toast, that one sounds very good.

  30. The weather has been odd all over. We escaped the mudslides. Although it rained it didn't rain nearly as bad as a couple of weeks ago. Whew!

That cake looks lovely. There's nothing like a nice bday cake!
