The Same Sky; Amanda Eyre Ward
Ballantine - Jan 2015
Alice and her husband, Jake, own a barbecue restaurant in Austin, Texas. Hardworking and popular in their community, they have a loving marriage and thriving business, but Alice still feels that something is missing, lying just beyond reach.
Carla is a strong-willed young girl who’s had to grow up fast, acting as caretaker to her six-year-old brother Junior. Years ago, her mother left the family behind in Honduras to make the arduous, illegal journey to Texas. But when Carla’s grandmother dies and violence in the city escalates, Carla takes fate into her own hands—and with Junior, she joins the thousands of children making their way across Mexico to America, facing great peril for the chance at a better life.
In this elegant novel, the lives of Alice and Carla will intersect in a profound and surprising way. Poignant and arresting, The Same Sky is about finding courage through struggle, hope amid heartache, and summoning the strength—no matter what dangers await—to find the place where you belong.
I just got that eARC and I am so excited to read it. It looks like a beautiful story.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds pretty good. Those kind of stories were daily news for us when we lived in Tucson, one hour or so from the border.
ReplyDeleteLike Jill, I would say that this is a timely story. I think this author lives in Austin. I'll be interested to read it at some point. And a BBQ restaurant in Austin - just tell me where and I'll be there. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to get my hands on this one. I went on a total Amanda Eyre Ward reading binge right after college, which is weird because of my total disinclination to purposefully read the whole catalog of any author. Anyhow, I've been missing her since, so it's exciting to see her coming out with a new one!
ReplyDeleteAnother interesting find!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading this right now and it's very good. I love Amanda's work. Great pick!!!
ReplyDeleteThis novel does sound heartrending, Diane. I hope you will be able to set aside other obligations and read it soon.
ReplyDeleteOoo, this book sounds like it would be right down my alley!
ReplyDeleteI've read the other two books by this author and now I want to read this one also. She is so talented, and I distinctly remember enjoying those books, though it wasn't that recently. Thanks for a good tip.
