First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Vegetarian; Han Kang

Leap Year messed with my Tuesday intro post this week. Even though I played around with the Mr. Linky, it assumed today was the day this post should be revealed LOL

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros where I share the first paragraph sometimes two from a book I am reading or thinking about reading soon.

The Vegetarian; Han Kang
Hogarth - 2016

"Before my wife turned vegetarian I'd always thought of her as completely unremarkable in every way.  To be frank, the first time I met her I wasn't even attracted to her. Middling height, bobbed hair neither long or short; jaundiced, sickly-looking skin; somewhat prominent cheekbones; her timid, sallow aspect told me all I needed to know. As she came up to the table where I was waiting, I couldn't help but notice her shoes--the plainest black shoes imaginable.  And that walk of hers--neither fast nor slow, striding nor mincing."

What do you think -- keep reading or pass?
(Feel free to join in this week by posting your intro below?

  3. I'd read more! This sounds appealing to me.

  4. I've been going back and forth on The Vegetarian for some time. It looks appealing but has me wondering if it's really for me. I will say that I'm leaning more that it might be for me after that intro.

  5. I'm thinking I'll pass on The Vegetarian--the opening doesn't really do much for me, and the premise isn't all the appealing either. Probably a good thing, as I have more books to read than ever these days!

    1. Definitely not for everyone - personally I love the intro as it makes me very curious about the narrator.

  6. I keep seeing this book around. At least in the last week. :-) It certainly sounds interesting, although I'm still on the fence about it.

    1. It's just a short book 200 pages or so so thought I'd try it.

  7. Well that doesn't exactly sound like the most romantic of descriptions but it definitely has me intrigued! I feel like I've seen this one around but I hadn't gotten a taste of it, so to say, but I'll definitely keep my eyes open now :) Thanks for sharing and for hosting! I hope you have a great week! :D

  8. I guess I missed the timing of this...it didn't occur to me that Leap Day would mess things up...LOL.

Anyway, joining in now. Love the excerpt. I'm curious about this relationship.

  9. I listened to the audio, and I didn't love it, but it was interesting. I think it has some deep themes, but my brain didn't want to do the work. It would make a good group read.

  10. Interesting little beginning. And, no, it doesn't sound like he was attracted to her at first - wonder why the vegetarianism made her more appealing? LOL

  11. If my husband gave such a negative description of me, we wouldn't be married. I'm curious to find out why he changed his mind. Maybe she's super rich. I'd keep reading.

  12. Well, I'm glad this poor woman became a vegetarian! It seems that eating only veggies somehow gave her the elusive quality of sex appeal in her husband's eyes. Gosh, I can't believe the man gave such an unflattering description of his future wife. Why did he marry her, then? Did he perhaps do so with the idea of persuading her to become a vegetarian, so that she would be more attractive to him?

I guess the only thing that would motivate me to keep reading is to find out how this marriage turns out. Maybe she runs off with her beefcake personal trainer, who is also a vegetarian. That would serve her husband right! Lol.

  13. What an intriguing opening - one which surely indicates that there is a lot more to discover about this poor woman

  14. Not sure that intro pulls me in, but I've had this on my reading list nonetheless

  16. This is a bit of an odd paragraph (it jumps from one thought to another). That actually might make me want to read on, to see what the rest of the book is like.

    1. Yes, why was he drawn to her if this is what he initially thought of her. LOL

  17. Ha. I can definitely picture her but wonder what causes the flame to ignite. Hope you enjoy it. Here's Mine

  20. I had not heard of this one, and maybe the intro isn't attention grabbing, but it does make me curious. Why did the fact she turned vegetarian make her more appealing? Interesting!

  21. Can't think why he married her! And she became more interesting after she became vegetarian? Maybe her skin looked better and she had more energy? I'm wondering how she describes him! Are you enjoying this book? I'll be interested to know once you've finished reading it.

  23. Not a very flattering description of his wife! I wonder what eventually attracted him to her.

  24. I would probably keep reading because it reminds me of the MC's reaction to his arranged marriage in Pearl S. Buck's "The Good Earth".

    1. Mel thanks for mentioning the other book as well. Glad you loved The Vegetarian, I just started it but I love the narrator already and the way he views his wife and her actions is so twisted LOL

  27. This was a strange book. I'm struggling with a review that doesn't give spoilers because it makes a few big changes in direction. And I wasn't crazy about the way they presented people who choose not to eat meat.
