First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - A Christmas Escape; Anne Perry

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros sharing the first paragraph
or two, of a book that I'm reading or will be reading soon. It's time for some Christmas themes.

A Christmas Escape; Anne Perry
Ballantine Books - 2015

"Charles Latterly stared across the untroubled sea at the shore they were fast approaching.  The mountain rose sharply, as symmetrical and uncomplicated as a child's drawing.  The sky above was midwinter blue.  At home in England they would be expecting snow at this time in December, but here, in Sicily, the wind off the salt water was mild.  The small boat barely rocked.

He had been looking forward to this break from reality of London, work and the routine of his life, which lately had seemed more meaningless than ever.  The recent death of his wife had given him an acute feeling of loss, but not in the way he had expected.  There was no deep ache of bereavement.  It forced him to realize that perhaps he had felt alone for a long time."

Based on this intro, would you read more or pass on this book?

Feel free to join in by posting your own First Chapter First Paragraph Intro and linking below.

  3. Oh that is a melancholy opening - I'd definitely keep reading although I might wait until a less jolly time of year!

  4. Hum, not quite sure if this is drawing me in. But I'd be willing to read a bit more to see.

  5. I love Perry's series of detective stories but have not always been keen on her stand-alone or more modern ones. This one, although I agree it sounds a bit melancholy, does intrigue me. I can't help but wonder where it's going. I'd keep reading for sure.

  6. I've read other books by this author so I'm sure I'd enjoy this one too. I like the way she sets the scene and creates a mood in the opening, and I'm wondering what changes will occur with this character.
Thank you for hosting every week.

  7. Maybe ... I need to know a little more to decide if I would choose this one.

  8. How utterly sad. It makes me think of the uncle in The Secret Garden for some reason. I'd have to read a little more to know if I'd want to read this one.

  9. I don't know this author and nosiness would keep me reading. Since the newly dead wife is so softly dealt with I imagine that some love interest going to appear of Charles latterly before too long!

  10. Oh, I'd definitely keep reading. I wish I had read this one this year. My question is, "Was it enough to keep you reading?" And what do you think of it so far? Just in case I stay up until 2am Christmas Eve reading it because of a favorable review!
    Best wishes,
    Judith

  11. I read this last year. Probably wouldn't re-read it, but I do have more Anne Perry's on my shelf now so it couldn't have been too dreadful :)
