First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - Sons and Daughters of Ease and Plenty; Ramona Ausubel

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros sharing the first paragraph, maybe two, of a book that I'm reading or plan to read soon.

Riverhead Books - 2016
1976

"SUMMER FATTENED EVERYBODY UP. The family buttered without reserve; pie seemed to be everywhere. They awoke and slept and woke in the summerhouse on the island, ate all their meals on the porch while the sun moved across their sky. They looked out at the saltwater cove and watched the sailboats skim and tack across the blue towards the windward beach, littered with the outgrown shells of the horseshoe crabs."

Based on this intro, would you read more or pass on this book?

Feel free to join in by posting your own First Chapter First Paragraph Intro and linking below.

  1. Sounds like a place I would enjoy in the summer...and reading it would be the next best thing.

  2. I'm not overly taken by the intro, I'm afraid, but the book does sound interesting. I actually find I lose weight in summer--the heat makes me less hungry. But if I spent summers at a summerhouse on an island, maybe things would work out differently. :-) Sounds like a nice way to pass the time.

  3. The very first sentence had me sitting up and taking notice. I like the sound of this lazy summer, sat around enjoying the weather and the food.

    1. That would be nice however, stormy weather can be frightening. We once lived in a house on the cliff of the ocean.

  16. Well, based on that first paragraph I would not probably pick this one up. It sounds too idyllic, though of course that could also mean trouble is just around the corner. But I have heard great things about this author and have been meaning to read her novel for a while now. Thanks for reminding me.
