Do you drive yourself crazy with self imposed rules?
July has been a great reading month, however, I am behind on book reviews once again with just a couple of days to go before the end of the month. In case you didn't know this, I have my own self-imposed rules to follow. No book review, means I can't count it toward my monthly totals....LOL (Do you drive yourself nuts like me?) I mean seriously who cares, or who would even know if I didn't post a few reviews, but added them into my totals. Is there a "blog-cop" checking up on me, or do I just enjoythe pressure, and having something to complain about?
Whatever the reason I read (2) wonderful books, and (1) okay book I need to complete reviews for. Be sure to read the first (2) books they are awesome:
(it's awesome - review coming)
(OMG...I Loved it!)
(good...BUT.....)
Reviews coming....by July 31st.....or "I will be punished"....yep, that is what my parents did to me a long, long, long, long time ago, but who holds grudges? LOL
Well you wont be punished here but those three books look very very good.
ReplyDeleteyes I am counting all the book Ive read over the year and I dont count them until they are on the blog (mad really)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the reviews! In the meantime, I'll check with my library for copies. ~karen
ReplyDeleteI have heard of the Mitchell book, it's supposed to be really good but difficult to read. It's on the long list for this years Booker prize I saw
ReplyDeleteI think most of the pressure we bloggers feel is self imposed. I'm so glad to see you loved The Good Daughters since I'm expecting it.
ReplyDeleteWhy yes, yes I do drive myself nuts with personal rules that I wouldn't really expect anyone else to follow.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, in my reading challenges, I cannot re-read books, I cannot have books that count for two challenges (no double dipping was instilled early in my life), and at least one book for each challenge must be something I would not normally read.
I feel your pain and I sympathize
I'd really make myself nuts if I felt I had to review every book I read! Don't be so hard on yourself.
ReplyDeleteYES --- I have way too many self-imposed rules in life. Fortunately reviewing books in order to count them in annual tallies is not one of them :)
ReplyDeleteI am very much looking forward to reading your review of Blind Hope. NO PRESSURE though - ok?
Seriously, I LOVE these posts where you insert that wonderfully cranky looking little girl...it shows up on my blog list and I have to come here.
ReplyDeleteI have rules like that, too. Mine is...I can't start a new book until I've reviewed the one I just finished.
Now that I see you loved The Good Daughters, I'm going on Amazon to order it (or preorder).
I know, the book buying ban...but it doesn't apply if there's a favorite author with a new book.
That's another one of my rules.
Here's to breaking the rules!!
What a perfect photo! There are really no rules or 'blog cops', and most of our blogging pressure is self-imposed. Just remember... this is supposed to be fun!!
ReplyDeleteI also have a few self imposed rules about blogging and try to stick to them whenever I can. When I don't I just end up feeling really guilty, so I understand what you are going through. Don't be too hard on yourself though!!
ReplyDeleteRules, schmules. I just posted a review for a book that I read MONTHS ago. Granted, it wasn't much of a review...
ReplyDeleteHahaha too funny! I am strict with myself on reviews and deadlines as well. I HAD to finish reading The Exile of Sara Stevenson because I HAD to review it by yesterday so that I could include it in my year's worth of review totals. It's my blogoversary! :)
ReplyDeleteAlayne - The Crowded Leaf
I do look forward to your reviews...no pressure though. I too drive myself crazy with self imposed rules especially when i think that i am not reading fast enough and my reading list is growing. But really that just takes away from the joys of reading : )
ReplyDeleteI have heard great things about David Mitchell's book - I need to read it soon! :)
ReplyDeletelol -I'm the same. I don't count a book as read for the month unless the review is up. Crazy the little rules we set for ourselves - just more stress.
ReplyDeleteDiane, you are so funny! But I know what you mean, feeling as if you must do a review for each book for it to "count". Sometimes you can get by with just a mention, though! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't place hard and fast rules on myself. For me, the only rule is to review everything I read. Sometimes it happens right away, but sometimes it doesn't. I've also stopped keeping track of anything but a yearly total. I'm reading more quality literature, enjoying it, and the numbers have little meaning for me. Still, I hope you do review these soon so I can hear your thoughts. I'm especially curious about the Booker-longlisted Mitchell. I hope to read it soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm bad at following rules so I don't event keep a count of the books I read. I'd probably only disappoint myself with the low number anyway!
ReplyDeleteIt must be the perfectionist side of us. Sometimes my self-imposed rules really help me stay focused and other times they drive me nuts too!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing good things about The Thousand Autumns and now it's been long-listed for the Man Booker prize. It's going on my wish list for sure. I'm looking forward to your reviews!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I used to do this; not so much anymore but I do have my moments. I used to think I would review every book I read, but I'm so far behind that if I punished myself I'd be grounded for the rest of my life ;o)
ReplyDeleteLOL! I'm behind on book reviews too :-) I don't mind though - I'll catch up eventually and there is no way I'd not include a book in my end of month total just because I hadn't got round to writing the review yet.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in your mission to complete them though!!
Totally understand 'the pressure'. I am just the same.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you think of the new David Mitchell at any rate. I LOVED 'The Cloud Atlas' and am hoping this one is just as good! :)
I love this post! It's so true. I think we 'police' ourselves or we'd get nothing done!
ReplyDeleteI list all the books I read regardless of whether or not I review them. You still read them, right?
ReplyDeleteI ADORE the photo that you included. My daughter makes that face at me at lest once a day. Makes me think of that creepy movie, The Bad Seed.
I'm looking for a book for the Nook and just might get The Good Daughters. Thanks for the suggestion! hmm.. I have to wait (it's not out yet).
ReplyDeleteRules... with the exception of June/July and the chaos from the move... I never start a new book without writing the review for the one I just finished.
I actually start the post when I start the book so I only have to write the review so I have no excuse. I need to do this so I don't forget!
Just remember we read for pleasure, enjoy the experience :)
I'm always behind on reviews! And I'm so good at breaking my own rules I've just stopped making them...:)
ReplyDeleteSo funny but I am relieved to see I am not the only one! If I don't post a book review I don't count it towards my monthly 'read' total either :)
ReplyDeleteNice to see I'm not alone in the stressful rules I make for myself!
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing!!! I don't have the exact same rule as you but I keep falling behind again and again on writing my reviews. I keep saying "I'll write it as soon as I'm done" and that almost NEVER happens.
ReplyDeletei just wanted to stop by and say that the photo in this post is ultimately creepy...maybe I will rethink my self-imposed rules!
