I would have saved myself a bit of aggravation over the last (2) days if I was at work, instead of home because of the snow and ice. Some of you may have notice that on Wednesday, my blogger comment system, changed to Intense Debate . I did this because I thought it would be easier to respond to all of you who take the time to leave me comments.
The good news - the installation process was so simple, and I loved how easy it was to respond to your comments on the (3) posts since it was installed: Wordless Wednesday; Waiting on Wednesday, and my review of The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears.
The bad news - my 18,000++ comments that all of you left me over the last 2.5 years no longer showed up under the posts.....panic set it big time! After doing a little research, I learned that, I could not have my cake and eat it too, using the Intense Debate Widget installation method. It wasn't as easy to moderate and respond to my comments from my iPhone either, which is a biggie for me when I am working M-F.
The end result - I ended up uninstalling Intense Debate, and am back to Blogger comments. It was just much more important to me to be able to see your comments on all my past posts. Unfortunately, my Intense debate comments that you left me over the last (2) days ( about 50 of them) were removed when I uninstalled, Intense Debate, but at least my 18,000++ blogger ones on past posts are visible once again...whew.
The Moral of the Story - Sometimes snap decisions just don't turn out the way you hoped the would.
In the future I will try to be better about responding to your comments :(
Ah yes, I know all about those snap decisions, made a few myself. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteDid you get my reply to your comment at Page Turners?
ReplyDeleteWhen I first installed Intensedebate all my comments disappeared and I nearly had a heart attack. My poor old partner had to listen to me go on and on about it. But I waited a few days and eventually they all came back!!
So I got the better commenting system and my old blogger comments back.
Just a thought if you wanted to try it again and wait and see what happens after a week.
This was really good to know because I've thought about using this but yeah if I'm going to lose all of my past comments - no thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that you lost some of your comments. I was just thinking of signing up for Intense Debate the other day. Thank God I didn't. I'm sticking to blogger comments, then. Thanks for the heads up.
ReplyDeleteSorry it didn't work out. I would be scared too if I lost all my comments. From your title I was worried that you had got into a big argument, so I was pleased to discover that that was not the case!
ReplyDeleteBecky,
ReplyDeleteYes, thank you, I did get your message, but then I found this info on the INTENSE DEBATE WEBSITE:
Read on if you installed IntenseDebate on your Blogger blog and your previous Blogger comments no longer show up…
Please note: Our Blogger importer and exporter are disabled and getting a code overhaul. We apologize for the inconvenience.
When you install IntenseDebate you are replacing the Blogger comment section with IntenseDebate comments. This means that the Blogger comment section will no longer show up.
I had intense Debate about a year ago, then got a new design for my site and just went with the standard Blogger comments. I have been thinking about going back to Intense Debate because i love the reply method, etc. So your post is perfectly timed. Maybe I'll wait a bit and see if Intense Debate corrects itself
ReplyDeleteDon't stress over responding to all your comments - you can only do so much. Blogging is for fun!
ReplyDeleteCan I be secretly glad you ditched ID? For some reason I don't get the responses for comments I leave on Intense Debate so for some reason I always feel guilty commenting knowing that I won't see the response (surely I'm the only blogger who has this guilt!).
ReplyDeleteMy ONE regret about Blogger is that they don't have a threaded comment widget but I keep holding my breath that one day it will come. I'm sad to see so many bloggers leaving and going to Wordpress, but those threaded comments are tempting!
Oh goodness, you must have almost had a heart attack when all those comments disappeared! I am glad that you got them back, and don't worry so much about responding to comments. I almost never do because it takes so much added time.
ReplyDeleteWe had it too, for a while, but lots of bloggers told me they were having even more problems leaving comments...so the debate was over!
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble with blog changes as well. I'm glad you didn't lose all your comments.
ReplyDeleteI tried ID back last year and had several problems with it. so much so that I too went back to blogger comments. yes, I loved being able to reply so much easier to comments..more like a conversation. and it seems some people have no problems with it at all. but too many bugs made it unworkable for me.
ReplyDeleteOh man, what a timing for code overhauls on the import/export stuff. I can totally relate to your panic, because I nearly got it initially when I moved to Disqus, but then the comments got imported within five minutes, so I breathed easy. Don't stress about comments, I try to make myself respond only where necessary. Most bloggers do not return back to see any replies. Sorry you had to go to all this trouble. :(
ReplyDeleteI like the threaded replies better, but loosing all the previous comments is not good.
ReplyDeleteIntense Debate didn't seem to like me much anyway. It took me several attempts to leave a comment with my WP id.
Question - where/how do you make/get the word button you used on this post?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you cleared that up for yourself, and me, as I was contemplating installing Intense Debate. Yikes! When will we get our cake and forks? :)
ReplyDeleteI love that intense debate lets me subscribe to just your replies (instead of all people who comment after me, which is a lot on your blog!), but I've heard from other bloggers who had the same issue. I wish blogger would enhance its commenting system to allow for easier replies too.
ReplyDeleteDiane, I'm glad you were able to get things working! Comments are such a vital part of a blog. :) (I wish I could enable comments on my Pages, without losing all my old comments on them.)
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know about Intense Debate, but now I don't think I will try it. I'm sorry about the loss of the comments.
ReplyDeleteThere are things I would like to see improved upon too but don't want to mess with what is, so far, working for me! I have fears of losing everything!
ReplyDeleteSorry you had to have that scare, but at least things have righted themselves again :)
ReplyDeleteI hear you ... I did the same thing when I was on Blogger. I eventually ended up moving to Wordpress ... in no small part because of the commenting system and options (though you seem to get the best flexiblity with self-hosted Wordpress). For me, commenting is the lifeblood of blogging and it is a shame that the Blogger system lags behind.
ReplyDeleteI haven't changed my comments yet. I wouldn't want to lose anything from the past either. Atleast you were able to recover the older stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think the whole Blogger comment thing was a big reason I went to Word Press for most of my sites. (I know, "normal" people have one or two blogs...LOL).
ReplyDeleteBut when moving sites, wealso ends up losing stuff...I copied and pasted some of my favorite posts when I changed over, but the comments don't go with them.
One of the things about Blogger commenting that's frustrating to me is the whole "several stages" involved in making the comment, from entering the comment to word verification. Some sites have an easy transition, while others...not so much. Yours is pretty straight forward.
I think I've figured out most of them, including Intense Debate, but there's another kind on Tumblr sites that frustrates me so much I almost stop visiting those sites.
Whatever makes you comfortable is probably the best way to go.
I will hold off for now!! Maybe (keep our fingers crossed) Blogger will come up with a new commenting system that is user friendly on both ends..wouldn't that be the berries?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to restore your old comments, Diane!
ReplyDeleteBlogger comments are sometimes a real pain, but I've seen problems with ID too. I wish blogger would just improve their format!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy with what is being offered at the moment. I'm not fussy. LOL!
ReplyDeleteBummer that the new system didn't work for you. I still use Blogger comments too.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say thanks a lot for the information. Because I was looking at intense debate to use their version of comment luv, but after reading this I'm going to stick with blogger comments.

Mine did the same thing! I had gotten so excited about the ability to respond to each of my commenters like I want to as opposed to how I have to do it here on blogger's commenting system. The whole ID system just poof vanished from one of my blogs (though is functioning just fine on my other blog. .. go figure) it is more trouble than its worth- I just wish blogger would upgrade their commenting stuff.
