First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Sanatorium; Sarah Pearse

Welcome to First Chapter/Intros, now hosted by Yvonne @ Socrates Book ReviewsEach week readers post the first paragraph (or 2) of a book they are reading or that they plan to read soon.

The Sanatorium; Sarah Pearse
Viking - 2021

Prologue

January - 2015

Discarded medical equipment litters the floor; surgical tools blistered with rust, broken bottles, jars, the scratched spine of an old invalid chair.  A torn mattress sits slumped against the wall, bile-yellow stains pocking the surface.

Hand clamped tight around his briefcase, Daniel Lemaitre feels a sharp wave of revulsion: it's as if time has taken over the building's soul, left something rotten and diseased in its place."

What do you think - read more or pass?   I had been eyeing this one for a while and the library copy just became available a couple of days ago.

  1. Judging by those first few lines I wouldn't read on, no. But the cover intrigued me so I checked it out on Goodreads and you know... it sounds really good. Only goes to show. LOL

    1. See and I liked the intro but, half way through I'm wondering what's up.

  2. I didn't care for those sentences either, it didn't seem like much but I'd probably read some to find out about the sanatorium.

  4. Yes! Honestly, just the title is enough for me to take a further look. Sounds like one I'd love.

    1. I think the reviews seem mixed by Reese picked it so I was curious. Still have about half to go.

  6. That opening, disgusting as it is, does make me curious to see where this one is headed.

    1. I was expecting this was all about the history of the Sanatorium but, half way in it's different than I thought it might be. Curious where it will end up though.

  11. Oh this sounds seriously creepy! I've been wanting to pick this one up but not sure I'm brave enough because it looks like it has the potential to be terrifying.

  14. Hi Diane,
I just spotted this post today. About The Sanatorium: I purchased it, based on a couple of starred reviews and other positive reviews from trusted sources. I totally understand your ambivalence at the halfway point in the book! I, too, was ambivalent. And my conclusion by the 3/4s point was that this book was ridiculously over-hyped. It was not great. It was mediocre, in my estimation. A disappointment after all the hype. I have found (and I should know by now) that over-hyping is common within the thriller genre. I should have learned this lesson by now, I think. Sigh!

    1. Judith, sorry you bought this one (I have the library copy so I won't feel terrible if I'm disappointed).
