Sunday Blatherings - the books, the movies, the cats

The Movie

I've had a huge love for Apple beginning with it's iPod, around 2002. Love its stock, the iPhone, the MAC, the iPad and although I no longer use an iPod, it was the first Apple product I ever owned.  After reading and loving Isaacson's fantastic bio on  Steve Jobs, I couldn't wait to see the movie which was released here on Friday.

The movie portrays jobs as an innovator, a genius and an asshole. Does a genius get a pass from treating others with respect?  We liked the movie, but felt it did not cover enough, I would have liked to see more. It basically covers the years (1984-19980, pivotal times when Jobs introduced new technology to the world, and was dealing with personal issues as well.  Michael Fassbender, although he looked nothing like Jobs, did a terrific job portraying him.  Kate Winslet, as always, played a fantastic role: the head of marketing, ever at his side and his conscience -- yep, I think there was one scene when a flicker of a conscience came through.  Probably the most touching part of the movie was his relationship with his daughter who he refused to acknowledge for a number of years despite paternity tests proving she was his daughter.  A movie heavy in dialogue, not in action or set changes, it's one of those movies some may love and others might hate.  My opinion - definitely worth seeing.

The Books

I'm extremely late jumping on the bandwagon here, but my audio download just came through this week from the library. I'm about 1/2 way through and really enjoying this one, which I last read about 35 years ago and remember nothing!!!

Not sure how many people are reading this one this month, but thanks go to Melissa’s blog, Trish and Care for hosting.

I finished, Kate Morton's The Lake House this week (500p). I enjoyed it, a lot but it wasn't my favorite - still need to work on a review.Listening to Salem's Lot and Reading - It's. Nice. Outside; Jim Kokoris (this one is so good)

New Books

The Cats

Some of you who follow me on Instagram have probably seen my "cats" lately, but for those who haven't, please "indulge" me. At our house you can always tell when the temps get cooler as we have fireplace cats, and lap cats - we love all (3).

Freckles - age 12 - Loves my husband,
views me as his food source.
 Lily - age 12
Loves me and my husband's laps equally
extremely vocal

Buddy - age 13
His heart belongs to me

Enjoy your week Everyone!

  2. I'm on the fence on the Jobs movie because of the way he treated people. Maybe I'll watch it when it gets to Netflix.

    1. I know what you mean, but Kate Winslet puts him in his place on several occasions LOL

  3. Not sure I want to read the Jobs book or see the movie after reading your thoughts. I don't know where I've been, but I didn't know he was such a jerk.

My two sons love Apple too. I do as well, but they have a true passion for anything Apple. We plan on visiting Apple on 5th Ave. when we visit NYC next month. I'm more excited about the architecture of the building.

Your cats are beautiful. We have a tuxedo cat.

    1. The Apple store in NYC is awesome. Enjoy. I loved Job's bio - fascinating and so much more in-depth than the movie.

  4. First of all, I love your dear kitties. Not sure when I became such a cat woman myself, probably with the arrival of Samantha at my son's then girlfriend's hand, but they seem to go along with us readers quite well.

I have wanted to read the biography about Steve Jobs since a book club member recommended it, but the length seems to keep me away. Somehow, I always feel I have "too much" to read, as if that's a bad thing. But, I am especially intrigued by this line from your post, "Does a genius get a pass from treating others with respect?" Indeed!

I never listen to my iPod anymore, either; it seems to always need charging, and now there's my iPhone6 plus to keep my busy. But, they are fun toys, are they not?

p.s. Wish I'd joined the Salem's Lot read-along. That's what I get for being absent from blogging all fall. Stupid job... :)

    1. I know what you mean - I have all the music and audiobooks downloaded to my iPhone now so I don't need the iPod - easier with just the (1) gadget......well, plus the MAC, and iPad mini LOL

Read the Jobs bio at your leisure, it's fascinating!

  5. I'm curious about the Jobs movie. I'm okay if the actor doesn't look like who they're portraying as long as they get the spirit right which sounds like this was the case. Love the pictures of your cats! They look like a handful!

    1. It's a very dialogue driven movie, so you really aren't very focused on the looks or scene....at least I wasn't.

  6. I'm a huge Apple fan, too, but like you I no longer use my iPod. On the fence about the movie, but if my husband expresses and interest I'll certainly go with him. If not, we'll wait for Netflix.

I remember reading Salem's Lot 30+ years ago, too, and being scared to death. Enjoy the readalong!

Enjoyed all the cat photos on instagram this week :)

  7. We'll probably Netflix the Jobs movie. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  8. I liked the Steve Jobs book - a lot. It was a bookclub pick and generated the best discussion we have ever had. Most of us liked it, but the dissenters were adamant that he was a jerk and not be issued the genius pass. I'm looking forward to the movie even if it does only cover part of the book.

I'm sorry I missed the Salem's Lot readalong. I haven't been around the blogs much the past month or so. That's what happens when you take on too many projects. I had more free time before I stopped working full-time because I used to just say NO.

I always enjoy seeing the kitties. :)

    1. I LOVED the Job's bio as well, so detailed and his personal life seemed so lonely to me, but maybe not to him. 56 was way to young to pass.

  13. I had no idea Steve Jobs was being made into a movie! I've just finished listening to it on audio. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I really want to see the same info again so soon. I'm pleased you enjoyed it, but I think I'll wait for the DVD so the details are less fresh in my brain :-)

    1. Jackie - I'd wait to see the movie, because you'll be disappointed by how little about Jobs is covered after having read the bio. Yes they cover the "poor me, I was adopted", and his relationship (or lack of with daughter) but the rest is about his creative genius.

  14. I think geniuses should get somewhat of a pass--they do change the world, and that takes a certain personality, but they don't usually make good family members! I'm not sure I will see the movie, though I find Jobs interesting. If I did, it would actually be to see the Kate Winslett character.

I'm looking forward to The Lake House--sorry to hear that it wasn't quite up to the mark but glad to hear it was still a good read.

    1. Hi Jane.....I felt for Jobs even though he was a jerk. We are all a product of our childhoods and he just couldn't get beyond the fact he was adopted and that he was unwanted.

Thanks for the kitty love - they are special.

  15. I am curious about the movie about Steve Jobs. I don't know if I'll see it in the theater--likely not, but maybe when it hits Netflix Streaming. Your new books all look good. I will look forward to reading your thoughts on them, Diane. Not that I need more books to add to my wish list. :-)

Your cats are so beautiful, Diane. My 15 year old cat fell in the bath with my daughter the other night and instead of scrambling to get out like he did before when it happened, he just stood there in the water looking up at me. I don't know if he was happy in there or silently begging me for help. I got him out right away, of course.
