Sunday Salon - May 9, 2010 ~ Happy Mother's Day!

Here is hoping all the mothers celebrating today, have a wonderful relaxing Mother's Day.

Wikipedia says: "Mother's Day is an annual holiday that recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well the positive contributions that they make to society. In the United States, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May".  (I think the U.K. celebrates it in March, and India some time in May as well, but I am not sure about other parts of the world.

My two children will be coming over later on Sunday for a pizza celebration, and later on CAKE. Silly me, and I was worried about those higher calories dishes in my book review for the Fast, Fresh and Green cookbook, which I reviewed yesterday...LOL

If you live outside of the United States, do you celebrate Mother's Day? If so when?

 My WEEK

Work was so much fun this week. This library knows how to have fun.  We had a health wellness vendor fair, and there were about (20) different booths. I had my blood pressure checked, bone density checked, and cholesterol checked as well --"I'm Normal" (well that is debatable).  They also had lots of freebies for us: an office supply company gave: pens, mechanical pencils, desk calendars, highlighters, pads, gel pens, whiteout tape and all sorts of other goodies. There were also coffee mugs, traveling thermos, book bags, post it notes and stuff. (I have always loved office supplies, almost as much as books).

On Friday, after work we planted some new flowering shrubs that my SIL gave us for our anniversary this week (OOPS....yes, it was May 4th). We planted (2) rhododendrons and (1) azalea; they look so pretty. We were going to wait to do it on Saturday, but rain was forecast. Good thing we got them in on Friday, we must have had (3)" of torrential rains and winds Saturday.....a mud fest in some places.

(Both rhodies are this color)

Just (1) azalea

Now for the Book Talk

Last week I mentioned that I am going to try and be more focused with my reading choices in May.
with----"reading the best books first". I made progress this week, so yay for me.

  6. Happy Mother's Day to you as well, Diane! I know what you mean about all this food to be eaten.
I have been trying to shed pounds ever since I delivered my baby, but every time I decide to eat better something happens. Today I will be eating a huge tiramisu dessert from Cheesecake Factory (which BTW is mouth-watering delicious). Ah well, we deserve at least that, right?

  8. Happy Mother's Day...it sounds like yours will be fun.

Lovely flowers...they totally made my day.

I can't wait to read the Anna Quindlen book, and I'm trying to decide if I can jump ahead of the others on my stack to read it!

  9. I love the flower pictures - they are beautiful! I read Beatrice and Virgil a couple of weeks ago and have mixed feelings about it. I think it is one that would be better on audio, but I still don't know if I would think it was something I liked.

  10. Can't wait to hear what you think of Tinkers. My book club tries to read the Pulitzer winner every year and I'm on the fence about whether or not this is going to be a good choice for them.

  15. I love that you work at a library that has fun! I also really enjoy your planned reading v. spontaneous reading. Now that this semester is over, I'm thinking of doing something similar. First up: reading the two other Pulitzer finalists and the five other Orange Prize shortlist books. Fun!

  18. I live in the UK and we do celebrate in March but my mother is in the US so we celebrate with her twice - once in March and once in May. I have to send gifts by mail but we do it twice and we also celebrate with my fiance's mom twice. They get cards and gifts each time. It's fun for both of them and us!
    Happy Mother's Day!
