First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros

Every Tuesday, I'll be posting the opening paragraph (maybe two) of a book I decided to read based on the opening paragraph (s). Feel free to grab the banner and play along. This week's "intro" is from a book I bought last week.

Georges Simenon

"He woke up suddenly at 3:00 A.M., dead tired, got dressed, and almost went out without his tie, in slippers. coat collar turned up, like people who walk their dogs late at night or very early in the morning.  Then, when he was in the courtyard of the building, where after two months he still couldn't bring himself to feel at home, he glance upward mechanically and realized that he'd forgotten to turn out his light, but he didn't have the energy to climb back up the stairs.

What were they doing, up there in J.K.C's apartment? Was Winnie vomiting yet? Probably.  Moaning, at first softly, then more loudly, until at last she burst into an endless fit of tears."

Would you continue reading this one? It is just 158 pages.
(I'm feeling a bit like a voyeur from the intro)

  1. Wow his life is really muddled. I'm picturing someone dying of cancer or maybe pregnant. I'd keep reading to see what happens. I think I've felt like that before.

  2. I thought pregnant too, yes, I think I would read it.

  4. Wow, voyeur indeed! What has got him so rattled? I'd definitely have to keep reading.

  5. I'm also intrigued! Can't wait for your review. I just requested too many books from NetGalley (ha) so I will wait to read your review before adding to my list.

Looks like a good one though.

  7. The first paragraph didn't grab me, but that second one sure did! I would totally read this based on these two paragraphs!

  8. Not quite sure which direction this book is going in. Maybe after another chapter or two.

  9. Oh yes, so many questions from just 2 paragraphs ... why is "he" up at 3 am? His apartment of 2 months doesn't feel like home ... is he alone? Did he leave a place he considered home? Why? Who are J.K.C. and Winnie? What's wrong with Winnie?

  10. It does sound a bit odd--like he's depressed. I think I'd read just to find out why he's feeling like he is. My first time playing your meme :) kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  11. I'd keep reading to find out what is happening.

  12. I would definitely keep reading...I can already relate to this character, as some mornings I feel just like that!

I'm curious about the neighbors, too.

    Looks like a good one!

  13. Sounds, um, interesting. Is she pregnant or on chemo?

  14. That beginning has me curious. Something is going on to push him out of bed and out the door at that hour. I'd definitely keep going.

  16. Interesting. You are right - it is as if we have peeked in on the scene.

  17. Nope, sorry, this one doesn't appeal.

I haven't got an intro this week - it's that time of year again, can barely find time to read one book at a time, plus I've already quoted this Booker's intro a while back.

  18. I would have to keep reading because the opening is too intriguing to let it drop!

I have that voyeur feeling, too, Diane!

  19. It definitely made me curious! I love the description
of him being dressed like someone walking their dog at night. That rang true to me!

  20. It's intriguing enough for me to read another 158 pages just to find out what's going on, the second para sounds quite disturbing and disjointed - if it were a real chunkster though I am not sure I would continue. Hope you enjoy it.

  22. I'd have to keep reading, at least a few more pages.
