First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Paying Guests; Sarah Waters

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where I share the first paragraph or (a few) of a book I am reading or thinking about reading soon. This novel is quite long (nearly 600 pages) but very good so far.

The Paying Guests; Sarah Waters
Riverhead Books - Sept 2014

"The Barbers had said they would arrive by three.  It was like waiting to begin a journey, Frances thought.  She and her mother had spent the morning watching the clock, unable to relax.  At half-past two she had gone wistfully over the rooms for what she supposed was the final time; after that there had been a nerving-up, giving way to a steady deflation, and now, at almost five, here she was again, listening to the echo of her own footsteps, feeling no sort of fondness for the sparsely furnished spaces, impatient simply for the couple to arrive, move in, get it over with."

    1. Isn't that the truth Laurel? I am not a social butterfly and find company (except for my own kids) stressful.

  9. I always have the same feeling when guests come, just waiting for them to get there so the visit can actually start. But somehow I have the feeling something else is going on here! Thanks for hosting :)

  18. I have yet to read a Sarah Waters' book. She's on my must read list though.

I didn't post today--busy weekend and I didn't prep last week. :-( I will be back next week though.

  20. I requested this on First To Read (Penguin) but was apparently not deemed worthy for this particular book. (Loved The Mathematician's Shiva which I did "earn", though.) Anyway, ever since I read Sarah Water's Little Stranger, I've been enamored with her work. This looks great, too.

    1. Aww, too bad:( Guess what? I was approve for an eGalley of, The Mathematician's Shiva, and when I tried to download it yesterday, it said it was already archived...boo hoo.
