First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Hotel Nantucket; Elin Hilderbrand

Welcome to First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Yvonne @ Socrates Book ReviewsEach week readers post the first paragraph (or 2) of a book we are reading or plan to read soon.  This one comes from my (20) Books of Summer list.

The Hotel Nantucket; Elin Hilderbrand
Little Brown and Company - 2022

1.

The Cobblestone Telegraph

Nantucket Island is known for its cobblestone streets and red brick sidewalks, cedar-shingled cottages and rose-colored arches, long stretches of golden beach and refreshing Atlantic breezes--and it's also known for residents who adore a juicy piece of gossip (which hot landscaper has been romancing which local real estate mogul's wife--that kind of thing!)  However, none of us are quite prepared for the tornado of rumors that rolls up Main Street, along Orange Street, and around the rotary out to Sconset when we learn that London-based billionaire. Zavier Darling is investing thirty million dollars in the crumbling eyesore that is the Hotel Nantucket.

Half of us are intrigued. (We have long wondered if someone would try to fix it up.)

The other half are skeptical.  (The place, quite frankly, seems beyond saving.)

For me, it's not summer without an Elin Hilderband and Nancy Thayer book on my list - my love of Nantucket Island is always satisfied.

What do you think, read more or pass?

  2. Yes! I'd definitely keep reading. I love Elin Hilderbrand (and Nancy Thayer, too). I have so many that I still haven't read but this sounds great.

  3. Sounds very summery and yes, those two authors seems to say 'Summer!'. I've not been in the mood for that right now and am looking for 'cold' books or nice murders. LOL

    1. LOL - that happens sometimes - I'm weird about summer books in summer in chilly themed ones in winter.

  4. Nantucket Island makes for a great setting! I'd read this one just for that. :)

  5. I have always loved listening to Elin Hilderbrand's novels. Nothing could be finer than to luxuriate in her plot, characters, and setting. But when I downloaded this one and started listening, I had to stop. Let me explain: In past novels, Hilderbrand has used satire (and understandably so!) to cast a light on the ways big money and super-wealth are affecting Nantucket. And for Hilderbrand, who has lived there for decades, one can only imagine how she feels about the changes that have taken place. Frankly, I'm appalled at all I've heard and learned. The first chapter of Hotel Nantucket was laden with satire about opulent wealth, and I get it, but I just don't want to read about it. I am sure that this is going to be a fine book, but I think I'll go back to an earlier novel that I haven't read for an Elin Hilderbrand fix this summer.

    1. Oh too bad Judith, I understand, but, do want to say that I did not even notice this as a bothersome issue. In fact, I'm on chapter 7 and haven't noticed it as an issue. So far very good for me.

  6. That one sounds pretty uninteresting, at least from the intro.

    1. Oh I liked the descriptiveness of the island as it takes me back after not having visited in about 10 years.

  7. You are correct; it wouldn't really be summer without a new Elin Hilderbrand. This one goes on the reading list.

    1. This was a good summer choice Katherine. If you have not tried this author my favorite by her is called 28 Summers! I highly recommend it. This one was very good too though.
