RIP V - an exception to my No More Challenges Rule

I know I said, "no more challenges", BUT I need this one, honestly. I love reading mysteries and Gothic themed books in the fall, and Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings has hosted this wonderful challenge over and over again; thanks Carl. The challenge is a (2) month one and runs from September 1st through October 31st, so how about joining and getting your Halloween fill of scary books? Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Gothic, Horror....pick your poison!

I'm in for Peril the First which requires that you read 4 books, but there are several other options. I'm already thinking about these books as possibilities (subject to change):

  1. The House at Riverton; Kate Morton - 4/5
  2. Moonlight Mile; Dennis LeHane - 3.5/5
  3. We Have Always Lived in a Castle; Shirley Jackson -5/5
  4. Santa Fe Edge; Stuart Woods - 2/5
Don't Miss this One!

  1. Diane-
August has been my worst reading month this year, too. I am blaming it on having to go back to school and trying to cram everything into the last few weeks of summer. My TBR pile is enormous right now, with no hope of it getting smaller unless drastic measures are taken!

  2. Woman in White is wonderful. It's the only book I stayed up all night reading. I just couldn't put it down.

  3. I loved Woman in White! The Little Stranger is on my list this year as well.

  4. This sounds like a really fun challenge and it would be perfect for me except I am horrible at challenges! I'll be cheering you on though!

  5. Yes I also find there is always the exception to my no more challanges rule. This sounds great, ooh I am tempted.

  6. I've been wanting to read Woman in White - looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it if you do read it!

  7. Thank you, sincerely, for breaking your rule for this challenge. I hope every year that it is a fun and relaxing one for everyone who chooses to participate and I'm glad you are joining in.

Forgotten Garden is a book I see often in the stores and hear its voice calling out to me. I really should heed the call.

  9. Oh noes! I'm going to have to add this challenge as well! How could you do this to me? LOL.
More likely, how could I resist, since I'm teaching a course on the Gothic this term.
    *deep sigh*

  11. Diane, I am so tempted by this challenge but am struggling as it is to finish my reading challenges at even the lowest levels!

  12. I really loved doing this last year--I'm not much for challenges myself as I'm a bit whimsical when it comes to what to read next, but I love the scary books in autumn theme.

  13. Superb choices -- two that are on my list for this year and two I've already read! And I get to make such a long list because I'm only participating in one other challenge this year. ;)

  14. All great choices! Kate Morton is a genius--I study her books for craft, but the stories are engrossing, too.

Just found 2 Victorian novels by Michael Cox--THE GLASS OF TIME (reading) and THE MEANING OF NIGHT (listening to the audio). Enjoying both very much.

  18. I'm going to sign up for this one too. Everyone seemed to have such fun with it last year. I'm working on my book list now.

  19. I need to stop saying no more challenges too because I always cave in :)

Although this one is just too good to pass up. Glad to see you are joining in. The Woman in White is wonderful. Hope you enjoy it.

  20. I so loved The Woman In White, both times that I've read it although two decades apart. I'm sure you will as well, it's terribly suspenseful. I'm glad you broke your rule! ;)

  21. Stieg Larsson is a great choice. I am yet to read the third one. Will do so for this challenge. And I have finished Never Wave goodbye for the challenge!

Please do check out the books I already read for RIP V.

  22. Great list! I've got Haunting of Hill House on my list too. I might watch the movie too after reading the book. I love this challenge!

  23. I agree with you on challenges, but the RIP is the only one I do, every year! It just fits so perfectly with the season, doesn't it? Anyway, you have a fantastic list! I've long been a fan of Shirley Jackson, and I'm going with the first of the Stieg Larssen trilogy too after dragging my feet about it for quite some time. Happy reading to you!

  24. I am tempted to join too! You have some great books. Hope you enjoy Larrson!

  25. I loved the Larsson books as well...I haven't read the third bc I know when I do, the story is over. Lisbeth Salander is an incredible protagonist...one of the best ever in my opinion...such a complicated person/woman.
I have added books to my TBR pile from almost every other list I have read...from yours I see I will have to read Woman in White :)
Oh to just curl up and read 24/7 :)

  26. I look forward to this challenge more than I ever looked forward to Halloween :)

GREAT list of books. Shirley Jackson books are wonderful - and very short. An easy escape for a couple of hours.

  27. I jumped right in for this one although it took me 5 days to decide to do it. LOL! Have fun, Diane!

  28. Little Stranger is on several lists. Sarah Waters is so good. :) Enjoy!

  29. I really enjoyed The Woman in White in audio. I think you will too...
    Looking forward to your reviews!

  30. Great list! I have several of these on my list as well. Can't wait to see what you choose! I have passed on the One Lovely Blog Award to you! Happy reading!
