Left Neglected; Lisa Genova
January 4, 2011
I loved Still Alice by this author, so I was thrilled to read about this one recently.
Sarah Nickerson is like any other career-driven supermom in Welmont, the affluent Boston suburb where she leads a hectic but charmed life with her husband Bob, faithful nanny, and three children—Lucy, Charlie, and nine-month-old Linus.
Between recruiting the best and brightest minds as the vice president of human resources at Berkley Consulting; shuttling the kids to soccer, day care, and piano lessons; convincing her son's teacher that he may not, in fact, have ADD; and making it home in time for dinner, it's a wonder this over-scheduled, over-achieving Harvard graduate has time to breathe.
A self-confessed balloon about to burst, Sarah miraculously manages every minute of her life like an air traffic controller. Until one fateful day, while driving to work and trying to make a phone call, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In the blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her jam-packed life come to a screeching halt.
A traumatic brain injury completely erases the left side of her world, and for once, Sarah relinquishes control to those around her, including her formerly absent mother. Without the ability to even floss her own teeth, she struggles to find answers about her past and her uncertain future.
Now, as she wills herself to regain her independence and heal, Sarah must learn that her real destiny—her new, true life—may in fact lie far from the world of conference calls and spreadsheets. And that a happiness and peace greater than all the success in the world is close within reach, if only she slows down long enough to notice.

I am really looking forward to this one also, Still Alice was amazing.
ReplyDeleteWow! I don't know what would happen if something like hat would happen to me! Gosh, I want this one too!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pick!
Sounds like an excellent book.
ReplyDeleteThis one sounds great! I still have yet to read Still Alice - it's on my pile- but fear it might be a tough read as Alzheimer's runs in our family.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know about this one, Diane. I am the biggest fan of STILL ALICE and think everyone should read it, especially if someone close is diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia. LEFT NEGLECTED reminds me a bit of an old movie starring Harrison Ford, think it was called Regarding Henry or something like that. I'll be on the lookout.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Still Alice and this sounds like another gripping story. Thanks for the introduction :)
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds intense. I can't imagine what I would do.
ReplyDeleteCheck my pick out HERE
Oh, this does sound very good! I will have to mark my calendar and check it out! Thanks for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteCan. Not. Wait.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds so good, and what a fabulous cover!
ReplyDeleteOMG, this one gives me the chills...it sounds like a heart-wrenching, yet wonderfully redemptive story.
ReplyDeleteI STILL haven't read Still Alice, but I know I must.
This author sounds like she really knows how to grab onto one of our greatest fears in life, loss of control, and create a beautiful story.
Here's mine:

ReplyDeleteMy copy of Still Alice has been traveling through the Midwet for over a year. I sent it home for my Mom to read, she passed it on, and on, and on... I bet 20 people have read it.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for Left Neglected!
This sounds like an incredibly powerful book. I got goosebumps just from reading the blurb. Great WOW this week :)

ReplyDeleteLisa Genova has a new book? That's great news. I have STILL ALICE in my pile and I brought it with me to Penang hoping to read it soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Diane..can not wait to read this one!!! Still Alice had a profound impact on me!
ReplyDeleteThe cover is eerie. The premise of this one is thought-provoking. It sounds like something that can happen to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI loved Still Alice, I will need to get this book. Still Alice is one I keep recommending to others.
ReplyDeleteI, too, loved STiLL ALiCE, so this book sounds good. Except. I have a terror of car accidents, and thinking about suffering a brain injury from one just about sends me over the edge. I find Genova quite an informed author about her subjects, and that makes her books especially good.
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks so much for blogging about LEFT NEGLECTED! I'm so glad you're all looking forward to reading it. Can't wait to hear what you think!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Lisa
I can imagine this will be a heart-wrenching read just like Still Alice was. Didn't realize she had a new book out so thank you for the heads up! It's going on the book list.
