Saturday Stuff

Who would have thought a little furniture moving with the hub last Saturday would have put me out of commission for (4) days?  That's what happened to me this week, and I have never had a weak back previously. Honestly, this was the worst pain (yep worst than childbirth) and the muscle relaxers from the doctor just seemed to make me loopy. I am better today and what really helped I think was the heating pad which I used continuously for several days.  Lesson Learned - use better body mechanics in the future.

Did anyone get to enjoy the glorious fall moon this week?  I did and the cats did as well...seriously they spent significant time at the windows each evening.

We are having company from PA this weekend so I won't be on the computer much after this.  Hope they don't expect a clean house as my back is not up to lots of cleaning.  Hopefully, my apple crisp will make up for a little dust.

I started listening to Freedom, Jonathan Franzen yesterday - it's pretty good, and the reader is EXCELLENT.  I also started Strangers at the Feast; Jennifer Vanderbes and it hooked me immediately.  On a more depressing note, I am about (30) books behinds of my 2009  reading stats for this time last year. (Working has definitely affected my reading).

Have a great weekend everyone and hope you have some fun things planned.

  2. I don't think we realize how vital our back is until we injure it. I'm glad you're on the mend. Enjoy your company.

  3. Hope you're feeling better soon - muscle relaxants work, but sure can leave you out of it. I got Freedom from my mom, will start it next. Enjoy your company!

  4. Sorry to hear about your back! My back's always giving me trouble. I see a chiropracter for it, and it's much better, but I still tremble to think about how if my back is this bad now when I'm still pretty young, how bad will it be when I'm older? It is some kind of awful pain, but I've grown to appreciate those muscle relaxers which mostly just put me to sleep. ;-)

Have a good time with your guests! I know that I'll forgive any amount of dust and clutter when you put some good food in front of me, and I'm sure your company will be the same. =)

  5. Hope your back continues to get better. I had a similar incident last spring. I definitely found that Advil and heating pads worked the best without making me feel dopey!

  6. I read It's a Book to my 9th grade class this week as part of our discussion on Fahrenheit 451. I love that book :)

Have a great weekend with family and friends.

  7. I'm glad your back is finally feeling better! Back problems are just horrible.

It sounds like you have a good reason to be behind on your stats.

  8. I can so sympathize with back issues! Take your time and allow for healing. Enjoy your weekend guests.

  11. I'm sure your guests will not even notice the dust bunnies!! I'm sorry about your back. I think this type of pain is the worst and the most debilitating ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! Note to self: let hubby move the furniture next time!!

  13. Sorry to hear about your back.
It is very easy to put a back out and not so easy to heal, I managed to slip a disc overstretching across a table to clean it. Many years ago and recovered now but do watch what I do with my back!

The tablets can really be mind boggling too if you are trying to carry on with life.

    enjoy ur weekend!

  14. Hope your back continues to improve. I have arthritis in my back and have found that Aleve and soaking in a hot bath are the best medicine.

  20. Glad your back feels better. Keep up with the heating pad, those really work.

    Glad you are liking Freedom.

  21. Diane, if it's lower back pain you might try yoga's Child's Pose to help "stretch out" your back, unless you find that too painful. It often helps me.

    The moon has been glorious.

  22. I hope you are feeling as good as new by now, and enjoying the visit from the company.

I saw the beautiful moon and tried to capture some pictures of it, but didn't do such a good job. Your moon picture is great. I know what my problem is, I need a better camera, however that is never going to happen.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Until next time, enjoy your company.

  24. You tend to think you are superman when you move stuff around. I do. Then I hurt too! So sorry. Hope you feel better soon.

I love the picture you included "Scroll down...etc" I love that children's book.

    :)
    Take care,

  25. Oh, Diane, back problems are the worst ever! I struggled for years, finally had back surgery, and was better. But I have to be SO careful...

I find that if I'm going to the gym regularly, I am better able to withstand these issues that come up. Unfortunately, I have been BAD about going....

So even when I go to the gym, after a long break, my back hurts! So I've been on that heating pad this week, too.

    Hope you feel better soon....

  26. Oh yuck! Back pain is awful. Having had a similar situation myself, I am so glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Apple crisp will make up for any lack of cleaning on your part! Have fun with your guests!

  27. I was in London at the beginning of the week and never saw the moon, but back to Portugal, yes! :-)
    Hope you get better soon.

  28. Ouchie...sorry about the bad back.

And yes, those pesky jobs definitely infringe on reading time!

  29. Oh, I feel your pain. A couple of years ago, I threw my back out helping a friend move, and have to say that it was the most excruciating thing I have ever felt. I think I was flat on my back for 5 to 6 days. I hope that you do continue to get better quickly, because it's horrible to be so incapacitated!

  31. Strangers at the Feast is a fantastic read. LOVED IT!

Very excited to hear that you are into it too.

Hope the pad helped the back... sending your good vibes and wishing that pain away.

  33. So sorry to hear about your back. I need to be careful... I move furnature around all the time (without my husband) and could easily get hurt.

I was thinking about listening to Freedom and since you are enjoying the narrator's voice I think I will take this on (rather than reading it). It's getting great reviews.

Take care of yourself and I hope you had a wonderful time with your friends.

  34. Ouch! Sorry about your back. Hope you feel better soon so you can enjoy your company.

Anything baked with apples is a sure-fire winner in my book!

  35. I hope by now you ar efeeling back to your normal self!

Also try not to be too hard on yourself on the reading stats. You are a very prolific reader!

  36. Sorry about your back! I managed to slip on my way to class today and it sort of made my back wonky. Doesn't take much.

I hope you like Strangers at the Feast. I really liked it.

  37. It's kinda shocking when a back pain creeps up on you. I was moving stuffs between two apartments a couple of months ago and thought I was really strong and wondergirl-like and all, until I flopped on the bed and couldn't move a muscle. I was literally yelling for help to get up.

At least, on the plus side, I hope you didn't have work?

  38. I'd love to hear what you thought about Strangers at the Feast when you finish it. I'm working on my review now. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying Freedom. I read an unfavorable review in a magazine or paper a few days ago & was surprised by it.

I'm sorry to hear about your back pain & hope it's better now. Heat is great for back pain, in my experience and salves like Icy Hot help like a heating pad.

Take care of yourself & have fun with your company :o)

  39. I feel your pain. Or did once. You know the difference between an ache and a pain? Pain makes you cry. Hope you're feeling better soon.

As long as no one touches the furniture, they won't notice the dust.

  40. I recently read and reviewed "Strangers at the Feast"; it was very good, and, you're right .. hooks you immediately. I hope you enjoyed it or are enjoying it! I know how horrid back pain can be; unless you've felt it yourself, you have no clue how debilitating it really is. Here's hoping it doesn't happen again!
