The Listener; Rachel Basch
Pegasus - 2015
1.
"She was a freshman, allergic to sulfa drugs and codeine. She didn't wear corrective lenses and she didn't smoke. She wasn't taking any medication. She's checked yes for vitamin supplements and no for birth control. At the bottom of the form on the line that read Other, she'd printed OTHER in big block letters.
Malcolm slid the new patient information into his notebook and looked over at the lanky girl anchored at the far end of the couch, her head bowed. Leah's a beautiful name. He considered sharing that he had a daughter named Leah, who was fond of reminding him that he got paid as much for what he didn't say as what he did, maybe more."
What do you think? Keep reading?

Ooh, love it! Can't wait to read it....
ReplyDeleteI know, it does sound good and love the cover as well.
DeleteGood opening. I'm guessing Leah is in therapy - right? - and I'm curious to know what the doctor is thinking. Will the reader be privy to their conversation? I hope so!
ReplyDeleteSandra, I haven't started it yet, but I'm guessing you are right about the therapy and by the title.
DeleteThe opening does have me curious . . . I had to go look up the book because I wasn't sure what it was about. Oh my gosh, I want to read it! It sounds like it will be very good. (I know I cheated by looking up what it was about--but I couldn't help myself.)
ReplyDeleteHey, I do that all the time Wendy, immediate gratification.
DeleteI know zero about this title or author, but I will guess from the title and opening that he is a therapist (psychologist, etc). I still don't really know anything about this other than the fact that I trust your judgement, so I will check this out further. Yes, I would keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI las drawn to this one by the title and cover. Hope to start it soon.
DeleteI'd continue on...I find the cover beckoning.
ReplyDeleteI knoe, I LOVE the cover.
DeleteGreat opening - I want to know what Leah is there for, I'd keep reading to find out more.
ReplyDeleteCleo, what does that OTHER, in the opening refer to? I want to know...LOL
DeleteThis one sounds interesting. I love starting with character. I'd keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI agree Suzie, I love a character draw.
DeleteI'd have to read a bit more or look up more about the book before I decided to go on. But I'm interested enough to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued to find out more. Sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteOh - I've seen this book around and read one pretty glowing review about it, but the premise didn't grab me. However, I love the intro paragraph - especially the writing style.
ReplyDeleteMy interest was caught by the 'other'. What does it mean? :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the girl and why she is a patient, so I'd read on.
ReplyDeleteI like that opening! Want to know more about both Leah and Malcolm... and what "other" means.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover of the book, and the opening reveals just enough to make me want to know more about Leah and why she's there. I'd keep reading!
ReplyDeleteOoh I love this beginning! Leah sounds like a very interesting character and, just like everyone else, I am desperate to find out what the 'other' means! Thanks for hosting :) I hope you have a great week!
