First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intro - The Fifth Floor; Julie Oleszek

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros sharing the first paragraph, maybe two, of a book that I'm reading or plan to read soon.

The Fifth Floor; Julie Oleszek
Mockingbird Publishing - 2015

One

"The first doctor my mother drags me to is a tall, thin man. He seems to think his direct approach will intimidate me, and maybe it would if I cared, but I don't.  I follow him into his office, leaving my mother staring at my back from the waiting room.  He climbs behind his enormous desk piled with papers and files of patients and motions me to sit in one of the winged-back chairs opposite him in front of his desk.  I sit and he stares.

'Stand up and turn around,' he says with as little compassion as he can gather."

Based on this intro, would you read more or pass on this book?

Feel free to join in by posting your own First Chapter First Paragraph Intro and linking below.

  1. This is a new to me book. Wonder why this girl is at the doctor's office.

  2. Now I am definitely curious. I suddenly have a very bad feeling about this doctor.

  3. His bedside manner certainly could be improved upon, couldn't it? But then, I wonder if our main character is quite ready to resolve her own issues. I've heard good things about this one and hope you enjoy it, Diane.

  4. Oh, yes I need to read on. I have to know if she stands up and turns around. Sounds good Diane.

  5. I do like the sound of this one although I wouldn't want to be visiting that doctor - love the line 'with as little compassion as he can gather!'

  6. This sounds like a good one. The doctor sounds scary. But why is she going?

  7. Oh, this caught my attention. What kind of doctor is he and why is she seeing him?

  8. Hmmm, scoliosis? Too logical? I'm intrigued.

  9. OK, I already don't like the doctor. But, yes, I'd read on. My twisty mind can come up with about 16 different scenarios - probably none of them right. LOL

    1. It's good Kay --- he's trying to figure her out if you get my drift.

  10. Yes, I would have to read on, this opening really hooks me in. Somebody obviously isn't well, but not necessarily the speaker!
    Miss Cellany.

  11. I agree with Kay. My mind is running in all kinds of directions about why she needs to stand up and turn around.

  12. It seems we're all agreed on disliking the doctor. I'm not sure I like the mother, either, or even the narrator. I think the author is withholding a bit too much there. Not sure I'd keep going but I hope you enjoy it.

  14. I don't like doctors so I would read some more to confirm I don't like him either!

  15. I'd keep reading. I want to see why she's at the dr. (psychiatrist?) for and hopefully find out why he has so little compassion (jerk!) and if that changes.

  16. I'm not captured by the cover or the intro, but I'll be interested to see what you think.

  17. This book sounds intriguing--I wonder WHAT is going on at the doctor's office! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it, Diane.

  18. I'm going to guess that the girl is seeing a psychiatrist because usually a parent goes into the doctor's examining room with a child. Of course I don't know how old she is, and what her issues are. The doc sounds sort of evil to me.

  19. A bit bleak but I am interested.
