First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros

For today's First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intro, I'm featuring a book I began yesterday. I haven't seen this one blogged about very much, but I want to say that I am enjoying it so far.

Feel free to join in by posting the opening paragraph (sometimes maybe a few ) of a book you decided to read based on the opening paragraph (s). Grab the banner and play along.

2012 Man Booker Prize Long List

"Futh stands on the ferry deck, holding on to the cold railings with his soft hands.  The wind pummels his body through his new anorak, deranges his thinning hair and brings tears to his eyes. It is summer and he was not expecting this. He has not been on a ferry since he was twelve, when he went abroad for the first time with his father.  It was summer then too and the weather was just as rough so perhaps this should not take him by surprise.

His father took him to the ferry's cinema. Futh does not remember what they saw.  When they sat down the lights were still up and no one else was in there.  He remembers having a bucket of warm popcorn on his lap. His father smelling of lager, he had drunk beforehand at the bar, turned to Futh to say, 'Your mother sold popcorn'."

Would you keep reading?

  1. Yes, this looks good, although the name Futh puts me off a little. Here's Mine

  2. Not sure - writing sounds like there will be too much description. Deranges his hair? Makes his hair crazy? Lol.

  3. This book is just beginning to pop up here and there. I like the writing, but at first I thought Futh was a typo for Ruth! Yes, I'd keep reading.

  4. Wow! First of all, I LOVE lighthouses...there is something so mystical about them. I am also very curious about the story of the boy and his parents, especially his mother.

Thanks for sharing, and yes, I want to know more.

  5. I probably wouldn't be apt to pick it up because Booker Prize nominees are usually not my type of books!

  6. I would keep reading, I'd like to know a little bit more about this family. My opening paragraph is from "Inside Out and Back Again" a novel written in verse. It comes recommended to me by Margot at Joyfully retired. kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  7. Yes I would, surprisingly. I'm interested in his strange name and his family, plus if it has something to do with a lighthouse I'll love the setting.

  8. I have to be honest and say that I might not. That first paragraph doesn't really grab me. I wonder if you will continue with it? If so, I'd love to hear how it turns out!

  10. I don't know, maybe if I knew more about the plot, otherwise I might be tempted to pass on this one.

  11. I don't think I would just based on this.

  12. I'm not sure. I would like to read some Booker novels but I would have to read more of this one before I decided.

  13. Let me jump on the bandwagon and say that I'd need to get used to the name Futh. But, the book does sound interesting!
