First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where I share the first paragraph or (a few) of a book I am reading or thinking about reading soon. Care to join us?

This week I'm featuring an intro from a book that I am looking forward to:

William Morrow - September 2013
What Makes You Afraid?

"Whenever the phone rang late at night, I lay in my narrow bed and listen.

My mother picked up on the first ring so as not to wake my sister, if she was at home, or me.  In hushed tomes, she soothed the caller before handing the phone to my father.  His voice was stiffer, more formal, as he made plans to meet somewhere or offered directions to our faded and drooping Tudor on a dead-end lane in the tiny town of Dundalk, Maryland.  There were times when the person on the other end of the line had called from a pay phone as nearby as Baltimore.  A priest, I guessed, had scratched our number on a scrap of paper and handed it over.  Or maybe it had been found by simply searching the tissuey pages of the phone book, since we were listed, same as any ordinary family, even if ordinary was the last thing we were."

What do you think? Would you keep reading or move on to something else?

  2. As enticing as the first para is, I probably wouldn't read this book - not the kind of title or cover that I would ordinarily pick up.

  10. I'm looking forward to this one too! I got a copy last week at the Association of American Publishers dinner. The author was also the event emcee and had the audience in stitches with his witty comments.

  14. Between the title and the intro the story sounds very intriguing but also a little scary. If it got too scary I'd have to quit.
