First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros - The Girls From Corona del Mar; Rufi Thorpe

Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where I share the first paragraph or (a few) of a book I am reading or thinking about reading soon. Care to join us? Here goes..... (my friend and I use to do the exact same thing with the lemon juice when we were teens...many, many, many years ago)

Rufi Thorpe - 2014 - Knopf/Random House

CHAPTER 1

The Best Tea in the World

"You're going to have to break one of my toes, I explained. Lorrie Ann and I were sunning ourselves, in the tiny, fenced-in patio of my mother's house on thin towels laid directly over the hot, cracked pavement.  We had squeezed a plastic lemon from the supermarket into our hair and were praying to be blonder, always blonder, our eyes closed against the sun. There was jasmine on the wind."

What do you think? Would you read more? I just started this one and I'm enjoying it so far.

    1. Me too Laurel, I added it to my TBR list when I first heard of it.

  2. That's a delightful opening. I'm wondering why one of her toes HAS to be broken, and I'd keep reading to find out.

    1. I'm liking it, but the audio version has a depressing tone. Actually, it's not an upbeat story so it is a realistic voice.

  6. What a curious first sentence- it would at least keep me reading for a bit.

    1. Abigail, it's story that has been written before -- more or less -- but it's still good.

  7. Sounds like fun - I've been seeing this one around a lot lately. I'd like to know more about the overall premise of the book, though.

  11. I've already heard a tiny bit about this book, but even so, I can tell this will be a coming of age story and I enjoy those. I certainly did try the lemon halves rubbed on my hair for streaks when I was a teen, but I had dark brown hair so it was a waste of time (anyone here remember those commercials in the '60s for Sun-In I believe? with the gorgeous teen and her streaked blonde hair)
Anyway, yes I would read this and am putting it on my library list. Enjoy the rest!

  13. LOL! I have tried lemon juice in my hair as well, even though I have dark brown hair. I'd read more, although I hope the toe is NOT broken.

    1. Freda, it does if your blonde. I tried it as a kid(dark hair) no success.

  16. I wonder how much of the setting plays a part in the novel. Corona del Mar is about an hour north of where I used to live (Del Mar, CA) and it would be fun to revisit some of the locations I'm familiar with. And, yes. I used to use lemon juice to lighten my hair, although salty ocean water and sunshine did a nice job, too.
