Welcome to First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Yvonne @ Socrates Book Reviews. Each week readers post the first paragraph (or 2) of a book we are reading or plan to read soon.
ONE
CLARA
There were four boxes. Big ones. They must have lots of things in them because they were heavy, you could tell by the way the man walked when he carried them in, stooped over, knees bent. He brought them right into Mrs. Orchard's house, next door to Clara's, that first evening and put them on the floor in the living room and just left them there. That meant the boxes didn't have necessary things in them, things he needed straight away like pyjamas, or he'd have unpacked them.
I started this book yesterday and I'm really enjoying it. In case, you are curious about CLARA - she is an eight year old girl. This is an author I have read and enjoyed in the past so I couldn't wait to read it. I was also happy to read that JoAnn at Gulfside Musing loved it.
Thank you for the update. New book and author for me.
ReplyDeleteI think you would enjoy her books Mystica.
DeleteI've read one book by Mary Lawson and that was Crow Lake. Quite a few years ago now but I remember being very impressed with it. I quite like books narrated by children as their persective can be very honest... if written correctly. I'll be interested to hear what you think of this one.
ReplyDeleteCath, Crow Lake was a favorite but, this just might be a new fave by the author. I am enjoying the story.
DeleteSounds intriguing, and now I want to know more!
ReplyDeleteIt's really good Laurel and how about the pretty cover as well?
DeleteI wonder where this is going.
ReplyDeleteMine is in French today: https://francebooktours.com/2022/02/22/le-promeneur-sur-le-cap-first-chapter-first-paragraph-book-beginnings/
I'll check it out - I did have 3 years of French but that was half a century ago LOL
DeleteSounds pretty cute from her perspective.
ReplyDeleteShe's quite observant isn't she?
DeleteI find that books told from a child's perspective are often quite fascinating and this one certainly has an intriguing beginning.
ReplyDeleteYes, she is wise beyond her years (in a good way); I feel for this child already.
DeleteI read Crow Lake years ago, and I've read some positive reviews of this one. Just the title makes me want to read it.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover and title as well and the story is quite good so far as well.
DeleteI'm glad Lawson has another young character in this new book. I loved Bo in Crow Lake and am looking forward to reading A Town Called Solace. My mom finished it earlier this week and said it's very good. Yay!
ReplyDeleteOh good, glad your mom enjoyed it. I like it an awful lot about 60% done now.
DeleteKnowing Clara is an eight-year-old girl makes me want to read this one even more! :)
ReplyDeleteSO snart and just genuine - well written character.
DeleteDefinitely intrigued - especially knowing the narrator in this passage is a child. Sounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteYes, It is a compelling story with a bit of light mystery as well.
DeleteThis sounds like a good one!
ReplyDeleteWorth trying Yvonne, it's has a bit of everything to it including a cat named Moses.
DeleteI'm so glad you're reading this, Diane! My mother read it shortly after I did and she loved it, too. Hope you're enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteJoAnn, I finished it this morning and loved it so much. Just a well-written, clean kind of story with a bit of mystery and characters you care about. So happy that you blogged about it.
DeleteHooray! I'm hoping to read read Crow Lake in March or April... not sure how I missed it years ago.
