Every Tuesday I host First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros where I share the first paragraph sometimes two, of a book that I'm reading or plan to read soon.
The Passenger; Lisa Lutz
Simon & Schuster - 2016
Tanya Dubois
Chapter 1
"When I found my husband at the bottom of the stairs, I tried to resuscitate him before I ever considered disposing of the body. I pumped his barrel chest and blew into his purple lips. It was the first time in years that our lips had touched and I didn't recoil.
I gave up after ten minutes. Frank Dubois was gone. Lying there all peaceful and quiet, he almost looked in a slumber, but Frank was noisier asleep than he was awake. Honestly, if I had know what kind of a snorer he was going to turn into, I never would have married him. If I could do it all over, I would have never married him even if he slept like an angel. If I could do it all over again, there are so many things I would do differently. But looking at Frank then, so still and not talking, I didn't mind him so much. It seemed like a good time to say good-bye. I poured a shot of Frank's special bourbon, sat down on Frank's faux-suede La-Z-Boy, and had a drink to honor the dead."
What do you think -- keep reading or pass?

I loved this book! Hope you do, too.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear this Laurel!
DeleteThat opening is awesome! I'll read this one for sure.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting First Chapter / First Paragraph / Tuesday Intros.
Glad u liked the intro Sandra (me too).
DeleteI really want to read this book. I like Lisa Lutz' other books and have been looking forward to this one.
ReplyDeleteI've never read anything by her so I need to check out her other titles.
DeleteSounds good to me. The snoring, the regret, the bourbon. Somehow I bet there is quite a bit more to the story.
ReplyDeleteLOL - I think so too.
DeleteA great opening for a book that is already on my radar - That opener says so much about the state of their marriage, I really liked the bit about the lips touching for the first time in years that didn't make her recoil.
ReplyDeleteThat intro really made me smile Cleo. Wondering if she pushed him down the stairs:)
DeleteOMG, what a creepy beginning.... She claims she didn't kill her husband, but then, why does she keep going through so many different identities? Why does she live the life of a fugitive from the law? (Got this info from the Goodreads synopsis.) Not sure I can handle this, but it does sound exciting! It reminds me of the famous TV show and movie, "The Fugitive". Might end up picking this one up! Nice choice! Thanks for sharing!! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't started it yet but, that intro made me want to dive in.
DeleteI would definitely keep reading - this intro really grabbed, more than many have in a while!
ReplyDeleteEmma, glad the intro appealed to you.
DeleteQuite chilling! And she disposes of the body - how? I'd keep on reading.
ReplyDeleteDon't know anything more than what the intro states as I haven't started yet but, can't wait to dive in.
DeleteI read and reviewed this one. Liked it.
ReplyDeleteOh glad to hear that both you and Laurel loved it.
DeleteI'd definitely have to keep reading. I'm not sure I've ever read anything by Lutz.
ReplyDeleteThis is a new author for me too but, plan to check out what else she has written.
DeleteI've had this on my radar and like the opening... would definitely keep reading. Lutz is a new author to me, too.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this book nor the author but boy it's going on my TBR list. Please let us know how it progresses!
ReplyDeleteLove that opening and I'd keep reading. Coincidentally, I came across a copy of this book when I was reorganizing my bookshelves last week. Guess where I'm headed now??? To that bookcase downstairs!
ReplyDeleteI've this book on my pile. Can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to read the book even more.
ReplyDeleteI read it and loved it. Just finished it a few days ago. Actually I listened and kept switching between headphones and speaker because I didn't want to put it down.
ReplyDeleteI've gone back and forth on reading this one but I love the intro you shared! I'd definitely keep reading and it makes me want to get my own copy soon.
