Good News

Yes, it's true I was offered the full-time Library position. I start on March 29th. I am thrilled, and it does not involve working with the public (a bonus...LOL). Everyone seems so nice, and so that (3) hour interview process paid off.

This news could not have come at a better time, as today we got a letter in the mail saying that my monthly health insurance premium was increasing to $703.00/month (a 19% increase) on May 1st.  Last year it was $590.00/month, and no dental either. So I paid over $7,000 in premiums last year, and they paid $265.00 in health care cost for me. How can this be allowed? And some people don't think we have a health care crisis?

Thanks to all of you who sent positive thoughts my way!!!

  10. Congratulations! That's great news! And as for the health insurance, mine is even more! It's just obscene! But you know if we cancelled, suddenly we would have some horrible thing happen and need coverage. They've got us either way!!!

  17. Congratulations! What great news! The health insurance situation is one, and only one, of the big reasons I am where I am and not in the States. Your premiums floor me.

  19. Congrats, congrats, congrats! I was keeping my fingers crossed for you and am super thrilled about this!

As for the health care thing... hah! I haven't been insured in two years - since I graduated from college - just too expensive. It ends up being cheaper to just pay to visit a doctor when you need one.

  25. What great news! Congratulations!

I hear you on the healthcare stuff. My company raised the amount I pay for a family plan from $32 per month to $332 per month! That was a hard increase to swallow, though I understand that what I pay is a lot less than what other people pay. And on top of that, they hit us with a plan with a $4,000 deductible and it only covers our once a year check ups...and then everything after I hit that $4,000 mark. Thankfully, we don't have any chronic conditions, but it might not always be that way.

  28. That is wonderful! I am so excited for you that you will be working with books all day. Warning, warning: the books will taunt you and want you to take them home with you. Your TBR pile will grow by leaps and bounds :-)

Health care. Don't even get me started! Friends who ignore large lumps because they don't have health care just makes me SO angry!

  29. This is wonderful! Congratulations, and best wishes as you start this next chapter of your life!

You had mentioned you were thinking about going back to school - does this mean you aren't going to do that?

  30. Oh Congratulations - how exciting! I'd love to hear all about it after you have a chance to get settled.

You are right about health care! We learned that it would cost 1/3 of my husband's weekly paycheck to insure me and we had to choose between the mortgage and insurance. Guess who is not insured?

As for the cost of health insurance - it's totally unreal. How can anyone say that the system we have is working?

  33. Congratulations! I'm self-insured too (oh, grad school!), so I understand the crunch. I hope you love the job!

  35. Congratulations! I don't think there can be a job better than one that surrounds you with books.

Good luck with the insurance issues.

  36. What GREAT news. Congratulations and way to go!

We do not have a health care crisis....we have an insurance crisis. There is plenty of health care, medication, etc. if one can afford the insurance. The two issues should not be confused.

And if anyone thinks this bill is going to help everyone, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you. Small businesses are going to be soooo hurting and many individuals still will not be covered.

My son campaigned and voted for Obama and he is disgusted - he does not make enough money to afford to buy health care insurance ----so he will be paying that $750 fine and still getting no health care. Yep, great work, Congress.

  41. Joanne...

you are correct, it is a HEALTH INSURANCE CRISIS, and I realize this will not be the answer as the plan is being modeled after MA and they have some of the highest premiums in the nation.

Molly...and everyone else dealing with this insurance issue here in the US, I totally understand, and have been frustrated by it for years as a private pay subscriber with limited options.

  45. Congratulations Diane on your new job, you deserve it.

Your health service is the main reason I won't consider my husband's pleas to move to America. Over here, I get free health care and it makes such a difference. That is a hell of a lot of money you have to pay out each month.

Regarding healthcare -- if you had something catastrophic you'll be glad you have it - both the dh and I have been sick enough to go to the ER in ambulances in the last two years! But don't hit me when I tell you we pay $52 a month for medical, dental, vision, and prescriptions. . .
