Hello Summer - My Summer Reading Picks for 2014

For many of us it is officially the first day of summer. Warmer and longer days, ice tea, trips to the beach or relaxing by the pool, on the porch or deck. For me, summer means lighter reads and a time when I tend to pick books, I really want to read solely based on the description provided by the publisher. I may review all the books I read, but I won't feel pressured to do so. For me summer is about pleasure reading.  So to kick off summer, I've picked (20) books that called out to me. Hoping to read at least (15) of them by Labor Day. Do you have a summer list?

  2. Great list! I have the Chris Bohjalian waiting on my Kindle and I just started A.J. Fikry (and have been loving it so far!). I'm also looking forward to The Arsonist. I have to say that I was disappointed with The Vacationers (too slow), although lots of other people loved it. My favorite books so far this summer have been Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore and The Fever by Megan Abbott.

  5. I'd never heard of "A Man Called Ove" before, so I looked it up. It sounds like a book I'd love so I'm going to pre-order right away. Happy summer reading, Diane!

  8. Welcome summer! I've got a few of these books on my list. I don't have a formal list of summer reading, but tend to choose lighter reads.

  12. I love the freedom, and "permission" you give yourself, for Pleasure Reading in the Summer. There is such a lovely breath in that, when I don't have to struggle with something translated or complex. Struggle isn't the right word, but it is nice to just read easily. I'm halfway through a wonderful biography, Freud's Mistress, which I'm loving. It doesn't fit for the Japanese Literature Challenge.,Paris in July or Spanish Lit month. It just fits for Diane's Pleasure Reading Principle. Perfect. xo

  14. I've seen a few summer lists on blogs and it's making me want to take stock of my TBR pile and make a list of my own. Hope you get to read all of them.

  19. Ah, summer! Bring on the heat! As much as I like the season, it really is no different than the rest of the year for me--if anything, there are less holiday to enjoy.

No summer reading list for me. I like your list though! Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands is one I really want to read, in particular.

  20. No, I'm not quite that organized. I do keep a calendar but not an official list. I tend to ignore it the same way I end up ignoring challenges (which is why I don't participate in them anymore!). On my 'mental list' we have a few books in common. I'm listening to The Vacationers now.

  22. You've got some really great titles on your list!

For myself-I've done away with lists, including totally deleting my TBR list this past weekend. Feeling led to go in a much different direction right now with my reading!

Just found your blog and I'm now a new follower through bloglovin :)

  23. I didn't know you could do a list widget in Goodreads. Good to know. Great list, too. I really love to put a list together but this year, I am just not focused enough to make one up! Plus, I wanted to read one chunkster and some books in between but I can't decide on the chunkster.

  24. I've read and liked The Shadow Year and AJ Fikry. Many of the others are new to me so I look forward to seeing what you think.
