Sunday Salon - 9-6-09

Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend here in the US, and a great weekend everywhere else around the world. The weather was cool and crisp this morning when I went out to walk with my sister-in-law (long sleeves and I was still a bit chilly). This week we can expect high 60's and low 70's all week. Not too hard to take in my opinion. Fall is my favorite season, and since I am a nester, I don't mind winter either now that we live in a condo.

I joined a new book club for fall at the library. The first meeting is the first week of October, and the selection is Snow in August; Pete Hamill. I was thrilled as this book has sat on my shelves unread for a few years now, so time to dust it off. Do you belong to a face to face book group? Are you happy with it, and is it a large or small group????

I was hoping to get this post finished while my husband is out riding his bike (of course he always finds my hands glued to the keyboard lately), but sweet man that he is never complains.

I got a few books this week I wanted to post about this today so I would have fewer to feature on Mailbox Monday.

I'm SO EXCITED - I received a hard cover copy of Anita Shreve's newest book: A Change in Altitude ;(I've read ALL of her books). I also received: Picking Bones from Ash; Marie Mutsuki Mockett (Amazon Vine Program), and Saving Sammy: Curing the Boy Who Caught OCD; Beth Alison Maloney (Amazon Vine Program) ---I can't wait to read ALL of these. I also placed an order for (3) books: Moonflower Vine; Jetta Carleton; Mudbound; Hilliary Jordon, and Winter Rose; Jennifer Donnelly (all of these were recommended by you kind, enablers out there...LOL

Enjoy your free time everyone.

  1. How exciting that you've joined a new book club! I belong to a smaller sized book club, and I love it. We're skipping our meeting in September because everyone is too busy, and meeting in October to discuss two books. I've been procrastinating about reading those two books, so that could make for an interesting week prior to our next meeting! :)

  3. I want Mudbound! I'm not familiar with Saving Sammy but that sounds good too!

    Have a good holiday weekend!

  4. I've had a copy of Snow in August collecting dust on my bookshelf too! Maybe after I read your review I will grab it to actually read! :D

I run a book club, very small with 6 regular members. It's really nice to have a face to face club. We make a night of it by having a nice theme related dinner first and a theme related raffle at the end of the meeting! For Julie and Julia we cooked from Julia Childs massive cookbook- we made the first recipe- Potato soup and the last dessert- yummo!

  5. I read Snow in August many years ago and loved it. I hope you enjoy it. I used to belong to a book club hosted by a local book store. It was a lot of fun and we read great books. But the owner was a young woman recently married and she sold the store after having her first child. I haven't done much to find a new book club but I should because I really enjoyed it. I love Anita Shreve's books but I haven't read them all...yet! I hope you enjoy this one!
I feel the same way about trying to be off the computert when my husband comes home from being out. I always seem to be on the computer and he never complains but sometimes he teases me. I might be the football & hockey widow and he's the computer widower he says! (Since I watch football & hockey, too, that doesn't quite work! lol)

Have a nice rest of your weekend!

  6. Your new book group sounds fun! I belong to a small one, but it's limping along right now. We need to have a better system for choosing books.

Good luck with your new reads!

  8. I recently moved to another state and have not found a face to face bookclub yet - and the pickings are looking slim.
I do belong to several online books clubs.
But I have an online book buddy - we enjoy reading the same books and have been doing this for two years now. We met on Shelfari where we noticed that we had almost the same book shelf.

I have read Mudbound and really enjoyed and I am looking forward to the release of Picking Bone From Ash

  9. Hi Diane,
Haven't heard of some of your books. I have read Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. It is a great book! You'll enjoy it! Thanks for stopping by my place. Have a great day!

  11. Pretty exciting to start a book club, huh? I do belong to one. It's been in existence for almost 13 years. We've been going through a bit of a rough patch since it grew to 20+ members but we are smoothing the rough edges out now.

Enjoy the weekend! I just came back from taking my daughter to urgent care (strep that came out of nowhere) so I have yet to sit down and read.

  12. I love fall too just not what comes after it!! I would love to be a part of a book club but haven't found anything so far. The Shreve book totally sounds good can't wait to see what you think when you're finished. You only ordered 3 books, do you have a fever?

  13. I'm glad to see the nice, cool mornings. The dog and I will start walking after I drop the kids off at school (finally!) on Tuesday. The dog and I hate to walk in the heat.

  14. Fall is my favorite time of the year, too! A new book club is exciting - be sure to tell us about your meeting.

I've belonged to a group for about 10 years. The membership has changed slightly, but I love it! We have 12 members (8 is considered a good turn out) and read a wide variety of books. I try to post a summary of our meetings on my blog. Our next book is Speak. We've never read YA before, so I'm looking forward to everyone's reaction.

  16. I can't wait for fall to finally start. Just a couple more weeks! I only hope the weather cools off too.

I hope you enjoy the new book club. I've heard great things about Snow in August, although I haven't yet read it myself. I've never had a chance to be a part of a face to face book club myself--only the online variety.

Looks like you got some great books there. I hope you enjoy them, Diane.

    Have a great week!
