Audio Book Listening Frustrations - Can Anyone Help?

Yesterday was one of those "why did I get out of bed" days. Lots of things went wrong and minor annoyances turned into major frustrations so much so that I went to bed at 8:30p.m. to peacefully listen to my audiobook but, the frustrations continued.

As many of you know I LOVE audiobooks and have been listening to them on my iPhone using several different APPS:  Overdrive, Libby, Audible, Volumes, Google Play and recently Glose as well.  Starting yesterday some audiobooks would stop after a few seconds once my screen went dark and now it is happening  on all of the audiobook APPS.

I've "Googled" the issue and it seems that others have experienced this as well but, I still have not been able to correct my problem.  Right now I am in the middle of (2) different audios on (2) different apps and I want to throw my iPhone 12 out the window.

Has anyone had this issue ?  anyone help?

  1. I was frustrated by this a couple of weeks ago. I finally deleted some of the books I had listened to and the next time I tried it worked, but not sure if that was the reason or if something else was going on. Yesterday, I was pleased that my Audible book loaded fine. Wonder who else has experienced the problem and found out what the problem is....

    1. Hoping that you don't have this problem again. So your book plays without stopping when the screen goes dark now? For some reason I don't think this is my problem as on a few of those apps, I only have 8 or fewer books.

  2. That's so frustrating! Do the audiobooks stop if you hit the sleep button yourself?

    1. They had been stopping as soon as the screen went dark so I didn't even use the sleep timer.

  3. Wish I could help, but I have an Android phone. No problem listening to an audiobook yesterday. Good luck! I hate those kind of days where NOTHING goes right!

  4. Oh, no! I listen to audiobooks on several different apps, too, but have not had this happen. When I have a problem, I completely turn off the phone and then restart it. I've also deleted apps that aren't working properly and then download them again. Hope this issue is resolved soon - good luck!

    1. JoAnn -- funny you should mention this as I just powered down my phone and tried the Glose app that gave me the most recent headache and now the book I had trouble with works!!! so happy. Now I need to try the Volumes app for Malibu Rising that also gave me trouble yesterday.

  5. Oh how frustrating. I don't listen to audio very much but that would drive me up the wall...

  6. Very frustrating indeed as about 50% of my reading seems to be audiobooks lately.

  7. That would be awful but it looks like you may be on to a fix!

    1. I think rebooting and playing with the APPS has fixed the problem (at least for now.)

  8. I haven't had that problem but I am having problems with Audible. The first word of most sentences is missing and it's bugging the heck out of me.

    1. Oh wow, I've been listening to mostly library audio downloads and publisher downloads. I'm saving the Audibles for the in between periods LOL. I think I'm good right night with my reboot.

  9. That's so frustrating! The only thing I can think would be to make sure the apps and operating system are completely updated and then do a full reboot. I'd want to throw it out the window too though! Hopefully you can get the issue resolved.

    1. Katharine, yes the reboot has seemed to fit the issue, at least temporarily.

    1. I only got this message (I also have a feedback issue like you from time to time with blogger ugh). I think the reboot of my phone has fixed my problem for now.

  11. I've read all the comments and it appears that no one came up with an answer to the problem. I haven't had that happen, but as someone else said, I find that if I bluetooth an audiobook to a different set of speakers, I sometimes don't hear the first word or two on each sentence if there's a "break" between the sentences. I manage to frustrate myself by accidentally pushing the wrong button on my iPhone sometimes and jumping way ahead or way behind in the book...then, I struggle to find my right spot again. But that's my fault.

Have you tried listening to the NetGalley books directly from the NetGalley app? That's about all that app is worth, in my estimation. Can't find any other reason to have it. It allows the entire book to be downloaded rather than streamed, and that helps sometimes. Wish I could help...

  12. I listen on Hoopla, and I've, at times, had to return the audiobook and then check it out again to get the audiobook to work correctly. Yes, frustrating.

  13. Oh Diane I sure hope this was just a fluke and things are going better. I haven't had this happen with audiobooks but then again I don't really listen to many. I think someone mentioned rebooting and maybe that will help?

  14. Weird. I've had no problems with listening to mine on Libby and Cloud Library. Good luck with it!
