190 - The Girl on Legare Street; Karen White - Blog Tour

Having enjoyed The House on Tradd Street, by Karen White, I was thrilled to be asked to participate in the TLC Blog Tour for Karen White's second book in the Tradd Street series. You can follow other blog tour stops along the TLC Tour here.

In The Girl on Legare Street, the sequel to The House On Tradd Street,  Melanie Middleton, a successful real estate broker returns, as does Jack Treholm, the handsome writer who is obsessed with unsolved mysteries. To Melanie's surprise, her mother Ginnette, who left Melanie and her husband when Melanie was just seven years old has arrived on the scene as well.  Ginnette has returned to Charleston, South Carolina, to confront her past and make amends with the daughter she left behind, but Melanie is not as interested in rekindling their relationship.  Ginnette asks for Melanie's help in buying back the family home. Before Melanie has a chance to refuse her and send her on her way, Ginnette share a terrifying premonition she has had involving Melanie and the old house.  Since mother and daughter both share physic abilities, and the spirits seem to be testing Melanie, she soon finds herself facing the ghosts of both the past and the present.

My Thoughts - The Girl on Legare Street could be read as a stand alone novel even though it is book #2, in a planned series of 4 (the final 2 books are due out in 2011 and 2013).  Personally, I was glad I read the first book when it came out last year as it really got me hooked on the series.  Creepy, suspenseful, and page turning, this book should appeal to most paranormal, mystery romance lovers.  If there was one aspect of the book I was not thrilled about, it would probably be Melanie's relationship with Jack. Melanie is was too whiny for my tastes when it comes to her feelings for Jack. However, that being said, if you enjoy books about long buried family secrets, betrayal and ghostly apparitions, then this might be just the type of book for you. This book is RECOMMENDED.

  2. I could tell at the ending of this on there would be another book but I hadn't known there would be four. That's good to know. :-) Maybe Melanie and Jack will finally get together by that final book. Haha

There's so much I like about these books, but Melanie's relationship with Jack--particularly her resistance and whining--grate on my nerves. My husband got an earful as I read, poor guy. Still, it's a fun series and I do enjoy it for the most part.

Thanks for your great review, Diane!

  4. I will definitely look into getting this one after and the first one after Christmas. I like the idea of it, especially the main character being able to see ghosts. That is right up my street.

  12. I enjoyed this second book as well. I agree though on Melanie with regards to Jack. She needs to get with the program and give the guy a chance.

  15. I hadn't heard much about this book, but I recently read Dar's very positive review and now, after reading yours, I think this is something I would really like to read. It's not my typical genre, but I am willing to take a chance since the story sounds so good! Awesome review!

  18. I am happy to read that you enjoyed and recommend this book and the series. I love the covers which is what first attracted me to these novels. I then read some reviews and added the books to my tbr list. But now I am pretty sure I will like them as I seem to like similar mystery-type books as you!(I'm specifically thinking about Louise Penny's books!)

  22. I am a part of an online reading group where you are sent a 5 minute portion of book every day for 5 days. By the end of the week you have usually finished at least the first chapter of the book and can decide if you like it and want to try it or not.... I just did the first chapter of the Tradd Street book... loved it... can't wait to read both books in the series.

  25. I agree that Melanie is whiny, and she drives me crazy, but by the end, she's grown on me again. I loved this book even more than the first.
